Iowa Senate Agriculture Committee Caves in to Factory Farm Industry

iowacci.org

Note from BFIA:  We like a good porkburger as much as the next person, but that does not mean we think the Iowa Pork Producers should get to have undue influence in putting Iowans' health and water quality at risk.  Read the bad news below on this bill and then take action.

Des Moines, Iowa - The Senate Agriculture Committee caved in to the big-money interests of livestock commodity groups like the Iowa Pork Producers today when they passed a bill (SF 308) that would undercut the Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) rulemaking process to restrict manure application on frozen ground.

Groups including Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, Iowa Environmental Council, Des Moines Water Works, Iowa Farmer's Union, Sierra Club, and the Department of Natural Resources strongly opposed Senator Kibbie's bill and called on him to put our health and water quality above the interest of the factory farm industry by allowing the DNR to finish their rulemaking process.

On Senate File 308 and companion bill House File 574, CCI Executive Director Hugh Espey said, "These so-called attempts to regulate manure application on frozen ground are so weak and full of loopholes that they will lead to more water pollution caused by factory farms. For all intents and purposes, this bill stops DNR from taking strong action to protect our waterways.  It's an excellent example of our elected officials kow-towing to corporate interests at the expense of the common good. Today's vote by the Senate Agriculture Committee is a slap in the face to everyone fighting for clean water."

Our legislators must consider the extreme levels of ammonia pollution in our water that we witnessed last spring as a result of this practice, the 445 polluted waterways of our state, and the health of all Iowans who drink that water and say "NO" to big-money interests.

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement at 515-282-0484 or send an email.

Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement is a group of everyday people who talk, act and get things done on issues that matter most. With thousands of members from all walks of life - urban and rural, black and white, immigrants and lifelong Iowans - CCI has been tackling tough issues and getting things done for more than 30 years.

Health Care Reform Update:  Tell Senator Grassley Iowans Want A Public Health Insurance Plan Option

by Alta L. Price, M.D.

Last week President Obama hosted a high level health care reform summit at the White House that brought together members of Congress and other stakeholders in the health care reform debate to begin to solve the American health care crisis. Both Iowa Senators Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley were there, since both hold important positions in Congress when it comes to health care reform legislation. While Senator Grassley was at the summit, he told the President and the press afterward that a public option is NOT an option for him.

“There’s a lot of us that feel that the public option is an unfair competitor,” Grassley told Obama.

Well, Senator Grassley, many of us feel the monopoly on health care by insurance companies that have failed to meet the needs of the public is unfair. It is critical to let Senator Grassley know that a public health insurance plan option is a life or death matter for those people who have been shut out or kicked out of the private health insurance market. Senator Grassley needs to know that Iowans are watching him carefully on health care reform, so let’s make our voices heard.

*** BFIA ACTION ALERT ***

Call Senator Grassley NOW at (202) 224-3744

Our message to Senator Grassley:

 - President Obama said let’s keep everything on the table and you immediately said NO, you    don’t want to give people in Iowa a choice of private or public health insurance.

 - Why are you putting health insurance company profits before our health care?

Thanks for taking action. Together we can win guaranteed, quality, affordable health care for all.

This action alert regarding recent comments by Senator Grassley comes from Iowa Health Care for America Now! organizer Charlie Wishman. Please let organizer Charlie Wishman at Iowa Citizen Action Network know what happened when you called. You can reach him at 515-277-5077 x15 or e-mail
