Need a convention distraction? Read an update from the Greenwald campaign!
By Erin Seidler Tired of hearing the same convention speech over and over? Do you hear the female announcer’s voice in your dreams? Are you now able to recite Senator Obama’s biography word for word? (Did you know his grandparents are from Kansas?) The Becky Greenwald for Congress campaign thought we would provide you with a campaign update and a little distraction from the DNC convention in your inbox. In all seriousness, we have some great updates to share with you. The Greenwald campaign is continuing to show strength and momentum as we head into the home stretch. This week, the campaign reached over 1,000 individual donors to the campaign. In fact out of all the 1,067 donors to the campaign, 1,015 are Iowans and over 70% gave $100 or less. This is truly becoming a grassroots movement to bring a real difference to the 4th District. In fact, the Greenwald campaign now has raised more money from Iowans than Congressman Loebsack raised his entire campaign in 2006. And, we are closing in on Congressman Braley’s Iowa money from 2006 as well. The campaign also finished in the top three this week in the Progressive Patriot PAC’s House Challenger Contest. Not only will we get a donation from the PAC, but also their staff said they have never seen such an organized effort to get votes from the top three finishers. More updates from the campaign to come and look out for our caption contest next week. Now back to the speeches! By Erin Seidler Tired of hearing the same convention speech over and over? By Connor Kenny The Sunlight Foundation has built the ultimate tool for tracking the lavish parties lobbyists and big companies put on for our politicians. As the Democratic and Republican conventions start this week, we thought those of you who aren't in Denver or Minneapolis would like a window into kind of influence pushing is happening there. (And for those of you who are there, I suppose it'd be a handy party-crashing guide.) More than 400 convention parties being thrown by the likes of Citi, Eli Lilly, AT&T and powerhouse lobbying firms such as Patton Boggs can be found at Sunlight's new site, http://PoliticalPartyTime.org Political Party Time is the results of months of work gathering faxed-in invitations from our tipsters - otherwise this information would have been near-impossible to completely uncover. However, you can strike a blow right now for more transparency in Congress. Sunlight has put together a site making it easy to call your senators and demand that they pass S.223, which would bring the Senate into the modern age by making their campaign donor records electronic and searchable online. As it stands, the records have to be manually scanned and re-entered, delaying their release for weeks. Take a look at http://pass223.com best, Conor Kenny You're receiving this email because we found your blog and liked its coverage of Congress and national politics from a local angle. We also put you on our state-by-state blogrolls, which you can find on the appropriate state portal at http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=WikiTheVote Tuesday, August 26

Citizens for Our Land, Water and Future
Janelle Rettig, co-chair Please forward to anyone in Johnson County or who cares about Johnson County.... Friends, Seldom do we get the opportunity to do so much local good and make a difference for generations to come. One of those opportunities will be on the November Ballot. On the ballot will be a conservation bond initiative. This could be the most important local environmental, conservation, recreation, and trails measure of our lifetimes. (The great political organizer and Speaker of the House Tip O'neil once said, " All Politics is local." He could have been talking about this vote. The fight for the environment and against global warming should start at home.) I've included some more details below, but I'll get right to the point now. We need help to pull this off. It takes a super majority of 60% to pass an bonding initiative. We know that once people read the ballot language and understand this initiative they overwhelming think this is a "no brainier". However, that means we have to get close to 42,000 people to flip the ballot over and vote yes. That could be very hard in a year like this one when many people in Johnson County might be inclined to vote straight party and be finished. We need help to get the word out about this conservation and recreation vote. Here's some quick ways you can help: 1) Forward this email to all your friends. 2) Allow us to list you as a supporter. We are planning endorsement advertisements that will list hundreds of supporters. 3) Allow us to put a yard sign in your yard or help us find some good locations. 4) Are you a member of a club, organization, or work for a local business? We could use them as supporters also. (A form is attached for endorsements.) 5) We are looking for speaking opportunities at service clubs, classes, religious groups, boards, neighborhood parties and house parties. We even have a great power point. 6) Write a letter to the editor to the Press Citizen, the Gazette, the DI and/or the Solon, North Liberty or Lone Tree papers. 7) Walk or ride with us in the September 26 UI Homecoming Parade at 5:00 PM. You'll get a free t-shirt. 8) Give us a few hours to staff a table at a local event. 9) Consider giving us a contribution. Every penny will go to win this election and turn out votes. Contributions can be made by mail or on-line at Act Blue. Citizens for Our Land, Water and Future, PO Box 5125, Coralville, IA 52241 http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/19976 The conversation bond initiative will invest $20 million over the next 20 years in Johnson County for conservation, recreation and trails, and will be administered by the County Conservation Board. This is an investment in our land, our water and our future. For a home owner in Johnson County, this would be an investment of about $2.20 a month—or about the cost of a large soda. According to the County treasurer, an owner of a $200,000 house would pay an additional $26.36 a year. Farmland owners would pay approximately an additional 21 cents per acre. This local investment will be leveraged with grants, donations, and other investments for a multiplying effect of 2.5 to 3 times. That’s $50 to $60 million for water quality, timberland, habitat preservation, land conservation, recreation and trails. With urban growth and sprawl, the opportunities to preserve unique and vital lands decrease with each year, so time is of the essence. No land with be condemned; only willing sellers will be considered. The plan will be flexible and developed with much citizen input, and the spending will receive annual audits. You can download our brochure here: www.landwaterfuture.org If you have any question, ideas or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. We would love to speak with your organization, neighborhood, class, religious groups, and your friends and family. Please help us fill our schedule. Please vote yes for conservation on or before November 4. Thank you, Janelle Janelle Rettig, co-chair Citizens for Our Land, Water and Future PO Box 5125 Coralville, IA 52241 www.landwaterfuture.org landwaterfuture@gmail.com 319-330-5587 cell Johnson County residents please vote yes for clean water, clean air, conservation, recreation, and trails on or before November 4. www.landwaterfuture.org Paid for by Citizens for Our Land, Water and Future Monday, August 25

Farm Bureau picks
By the IFB The Iowa Farm Bureau has announced its picks in this year's congressional and legislative races and in the QC area incumbents got the nod in most cases, including some Democrats U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley, a Waterloo Democrat, was the Farm Bureau's pick over Republican challenger, state Sen. David Hartsuch of Bettendorf. The Farm Bureau picked Mike Whalen over Braley a couple years ago. Also, Rep. Dave Loebsack, a Mount Vernon Democrat, got the nod over Mariannette Miller-Meeks, an Ottumwa Republican. On the legislative side, Ross Paustian, a former county farm bureau president, got the endorsement over incumbent state Rep. Elesha Gayman, D-Davenport, in District 84. Republicans are putting a lot of emphasis on this race, so it was important for Paustian to get the nod. In another race that's being watched, state Sen. Frank Wood, an Eldridge Democrat, was the Farm Bureau's pick in District 42 over Davenport Alderman Shawn Hamerlinck, a Republican challenger. Elsewhere, Reps. Jamie Van Fossen, Linda Miller and Steve Olson, all Republican incumbents, were picked by the Farm Bureau. So was Jim Lykam, a Davenport Democrat. © Copyright 2008, The Quad-City Times, Davenport, IA Saturday, August 23

It's Biden and Obama
By Sam Garchik It's Biden as the VP. I'm kind of thinking Obama waited until the last minute to get as many cellphone numbers as possible. A source close to me says it might be because it gives him, and not the Clintons, more time under the spotlight at the convention. I used to think it was so conservative talk show hosts wouldnt be able to comment on the choice. Ideas? Friday, August 22

"Guests of the Nation" By Mike Palecek To be released October, 2008 A new novel by Mike Palecek, with original illustrations by Michael Paul Miller, Russell Brutsche, Allison Healy. Published by 7th Street Press • For review copies, to arrange interview with author or artists, write to: mpalecek@rconnect.com. • To pre-order copies, write to same address. • New website, for GOTN, will be up on September 1st. www.mikepalecek.com Thank you for your time. 7th Street Press ________________________ Astounding, astonishing, and haunting, "Guests Of The Nation" offers an intriguing alternative to what the late George Carlin called the 9/11 "consensus reality." Philip K. Dick would love how this deft American novel captures our imagination and never lets go. Mike Palecek has graced us with a sparkling gem you'll read non-stop and more than once. — Karen Kwiatkowski, Lt Col [ret.], USAF, Ph.D, working at the Pentagon on 9/11 “Once again, Mike Palecek deftly connects the dots with Guests of the Nation. The picture that emerges is horrifyingly clear for those who have eyes to see.” David Mathison, Publisher BE THE MEDIA "Mike Palecek has the uncanny ability to convey an understanding of real events through the medium of fiction. No one who reads this book will ever feel the same way about our government and will burn to learn how close he has come to revealing the truth about the events of 9/11. The answer, alas, is, all too close!" — James H. Fetzer, Ph.D., Founder, Scholars for 9/11 Truth "I loved it! "I
think GOTN is a timely published 9/11 story, a quick and easy read for
our too busy lives, and one that just might sink into the American
people's consciousness, finally. I wish it could be placed for sale on
every store's "impulse" check-out counter across the USA . . . " Elizebeth O. Metz Summer of Truth, 2008, The Plane Truth Project REDUX "Once again, Palecek leads us sleepwalkers through Nightmerica, the twisted beyond corruption conspiracyland of a million fears. Our tour begins in the nooks, crannies, and crawlspaces necessarily accessed to bring a building down in its footprint. Before George W. Bush's bloody rampage across the world could commence there need be a "catalyzing" event. Enter the crime of the century on the eleventh day of the ninth month of the first year. Palecek goes among the real 9/11 conspirators to prove fiction is no stranger to truth. Palecek chronicles better than anyone America's legion nobodies, shocked, awed, and standing appalled as their president careers around the globe, death and hellfire marking his passage. From headless corpses bobbing down the Tigris, to Lousianna's unindentified "floaters," Palecek reminds, we're all little people in this not so brave Neo World; no more citizens, but merely "guests" serving at the pleasure of the president." — Chris Cook, Gorilla Radio "Gripping,
insightful character dialogue leading to that nagging suspicion
that something doesn't seem to add up within our currently accepted,
main stream media promoted worldview — finishing with the only possible
solution of a totalitarian agenda. — Dan Nalven, 911Truth.org
