Contact Congress About Verified Voting
By Sean Flahety, IVI

We need your help today to make sure that Congress does not reverse the nation's progress toward voter-verified paper ballots.

It is not an exaggeration to say this could be one of the most important actions you ever take on the issue of verified voting. After you take action, please forward this message to your friends.

Here is what's happening. This Wednesday, the U.S. Senate will hold hearings on S.3212, a bill aimed at providing independent verification of ballots cast on electronic voting machines. That's a laudable goal, but S.3212 gets it wrong - very wrong.

S.3212 would allow electronic "verification" of votes cast on electronic voting machines. If S.3212 becomes law, elections in many states would still depend on the trustworthiness of computer software. This bill also fails to require hand audits of federal election results, and contains other measures that could set back years of progress toward transparent and trustworthy elections.

Click here to tell your Senators to oppose S.3212.

Senator Feinstein and Senator Bennett are the chair and ranking member of the committee that oversees federal election law, so this bill could become law one day  - unless Senators hear a clear message that it is not acceptable.

Even if S.3212 does not advance in this Congress, Senator Feinstein and Senator Bennett may see it as the starting point for legislation in 2009. They need to hear from you now in order to make sure that future federal legislation advances, rather than reverses, progress toward verified voting.

We have made too much progress to let this bill become law. Most states have taken steps to require verifiable voting systems, but a number have not. S.3212 could leave millions dependent on paperless electronic voting for the foreseeable future. With your help, we can prevent this bill from moving forward, and continue the progress we have made toward real verification of our elections.

Please act today, and forward this message on to your friends! Thank you for all you do.

Best regards,
The Team at Verified Voting

P.S. Your support is needed; please consider  donating to VerifiedVoting.org, our 501c4 lobbying organization (non-tax-deductible) or to Verified Voting Foundation (tax-deductible).  Donations to VerifiedVoting.org, while not tax-deductible, are where your contribution can help most in the fight against S.3212

Bush Admin Against Choice
By Planned Parenthood of Iowa

The Bush Administration is proposing a rule change in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that would drastically change the way family planning services are provided in the U.S. and Iowa.

Rule Change in Brief:
* Redefining "abortion" to include most birth control.
* Broad expansion of conscience clauses; so much that our already strained health care system may not be able to adequately provide service to millions.
* Violating state's rights overturning contraceptive equity and access laws in up to 34 states including Iowa.

Members of the Iowa Congressional delegation have publicly opposed this potential rule change, and Planned Parenthood commends their efforts to maintain access to contraceptives and expand women's health.

Attached please find a fact sheet summarizing the potential rule change, along with the letters from the U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Included is independent polling conducted by Anzalone Lizt Research that shows the support publicly-funded contraceptives have among Iowa voters, even among self-identified "anti-choice" voters.

Jill June, CEO and President of Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa is available for media interviews, and comments on this developing story.

To schedule an interview, please call (515) 249-6084.

GOVERNOR CULVER, LT. GOVERNOR JUDGE CALL ON IOWANS TO APPLY FOR REBUILD IOWA TASK FORCES

To apply, Iowans should complete and return attached application form, also available on-line at  flood2008.iowa.gov

Governor Chet Culver and Lt. Governor Patty Judge are inviting Iowans to apply for a position on one of the nine new Rebuild Iowa task forces, which will help create a vision for Iowa's recovery efforts.

"As the flood waters rose, we saw the strength, resilience and determination of Iowans shine through as our state joined together to save our homes, businesses, and communities," said Governor Chet Culver.  "Now, we must tap into this same spirit of service as Iowans begin down the road to recovery.  I call  on Iowans from across the state to help our friends and neighbors in need, and serve on one of these nine Rebuild Iowa task forces. By locking arms and working together, I am confident that we can rebuild our state, stronger and better than before."

Last month, Governor Culver signed his seventh executive order, which created the Rebuild Iowa Advisory Commission.  To be chaired by Gen. Ron Dardis of the Iowa National Guard, the 15 member commission is designed to help guide our state's recovery efforts.  The Executive Order specifically calls for the creation of task forces to help guide the commission's work.

"These task forces are an important step in helping Iowans recover from this year's historic and severe flooding," said Lt. Governor Patty Judge. "The Governor and I look forward to working with the Rebuild Iowa Commission, the nine task forces, and all Iowans as we begin the difficult work of rebuilding our state and returning life to normal for all Iowans.

The nine task forces created are:
* Housing
* Flood Plain Management and Hazard Mitigation
* Infrastructure and Transportation
* Economic and Workforce Development
* Cultural Heritage and Records Retention
* Public Health and Health Care
* Long-Term Recovery Planning
* Agriculture and Environment
* Education

Iowans interested in applying should complete and return attached application form, also available on-line.

Watch the premiere of our first LIVE show: Meet the Bloggers
By Brave New Films

You know how we're always attempting to make an impact with our films?

We helped spread the word about hard-hitting documentaries like Outfoxed, Wal-Mart, and Iraq for Sale.  Our sister organization, Brave New Films, then started making its own short videos like The REAL McCain and our FOX Attacks series, and you saw the chance to reach even more people by spreading them all over the web.  Well, with a great deal of excitement (and just a wee bit of nervousness!), we bring you the next way for you to get involved.

Presenting the trailer to our newest weekly series: Meet the Bloggers

Beginning July 18, Meet the Bloggers will be a daring new show broadcast LIVE over the internet each Friday at 1PM ET.  And the best part is this show is all yours. You will be part of creating the show, telling us what questions we should ask our high-profile guests; what issues we should be talking about; and what actions should be taken.  You can also interact with other audience members using a live blog and instant polls.

Watch Meet the Bloggers LIVE each Friday

We've already lined up some dazzling guests including John Cusack, Sen. Harry Reid, Rachel Maddow, and this week, Arianna Huffington (more exciting guests to be announced soon). The show's host will be Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks.  And we have a really diverse mix of bloggers including Marcy Wheeler (Emptywheel), Nico Pitney (The Huffington Post), Liliana Segura (AlterNet), Roberto Lovato (Of America), Baratunde Thurston (Jack & Jill Politics), and Faiz Shakir (Think Progress) to bring you smart, unconventional political analysis.

Don't miss this Friday's premiere of Meet the Bloggers, in which we'll be discussing whether Karl Rove should be sent to jail for failing to comply with the House Judiciary Committee's subpoena.  Now's your chance to become part of the Meet the Bloggers community; send us your questions and comments before Friday's show for us to consider to include. Give input for our Friday show here: http://meetthebloggers.org.

And if you do miss this Friday's premiere or any other episode, you can still watch them free online any time at meetthebloggers.org.  We can't allow the corporatism to dominate the discourse any longer.  The stakes are much too high.  So please join us live in watching and spreading Meet the Bloggers beginning this Friday, July 18 at 1PM ET.

Yours,
Robert Greenwald, Leighton Woodhouse, Paris Marron, Joey Smallwood,
and the Brave New Team

DFA Training Academy Coming to Des Moines in Feb/March 2009!

By Sam Garchik

I got an email from Jeff Goetz in Des Moines. He said that he was working on getting a DFA traning in Des Moines in March 2009. This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone in the region.

I attended one in Cedar Rapids in the Spring of 2007. I learned a lot about how to run a campaign and build a campaign plan. Do not miss this opportunity.
Jeff said that he is in the process of organizing a committee to get it off the ground.

If anyone in the Des Moines area is interested in helping, you can contact him at jeffreygoetz3@mchsi.com or home phone 515/279-7888, work phone 515/246-5817 or cell phone 515/710-1988.

Thanks, and please help Jeff get this going!
