Nolte - You Up for Another Run?

By Sam Garchik

Popular Progressive had this first, then Deeth, then Iowa Progress. It's a week old by the time I got it, but hey. Greiner is leaving and Nolte, a one-time and hopefully future BFIA contributor, should run again.

Also, I voted during the SILO election, and because things were going kind of slow at the polling place, I used the new machine! This was a pretty cool thing. It's not a Diebold - there's a paper trail and all, and you have two opportunities to change your vote one you actually vote. So yeah, I went back and forth on the SILO, and the machine kept a paper trail of EVERYTIME I changed my vote. I was pretty happy with how the thing was set up. Deeth - you got an idea as to the merits of this machine? Also, anyone else out there know anything about these gizmos?

Iowa House Votes on Iraq Resolution, Senate Vote Stalled

By Rapid Response

Let's give our congressional representatives some exposure....

HR 63:  Disapproving of the decision of the pResident announced on January 10, 2007 to deploy more than 20,000 additional United States combat troops in Iraq

Boswell: Yea
Braley: Yea
King: Nay
Latham: Nay
Loebsack: Yea

Please write positive letters-to-the-editor in support of Boswell, Braley and Loebsack for their no-confidence vote on the Iraq troop escalation.  Predictably, Steve King and Tom Latham voted to support the Bush-Cheney neoconservative agenda.

Although the vote is non-binding, it's important to keep pressure on Democrats-- tell them we want a binding resolution in follow-up.  And, with 2 new freshman congressmen in IA-01 & 02, let's give them some positive coverage.

Also, let's help out Democratic candidate Selden Spencer in IA-04.  And, in the event Steve King challenges Tom Harkin for the Senate, it can only help Tom.  If there is an open congressional seat in IA-05, we'll want to push hard to replace him with a Democrat--- I understand there is a possible Democratic congressional challenger as of 2/14/07.

Excerpt below:

"Our brave men and women in uniform are fighting a war of choice in which we sent our young people into harm's way without leveling with the American people.  They were sent into war without intelligence about what they were going to confront, without the equipment to protect them, and without a plan for what would happen after the fall of Baghdad.  Disagreement with the policies that sent our troops to Iraq, and which keep them in danger today, in no way diminishes the respect and admiration which we have for them.

Democrats strongly support our troops; we have the finest armed forces in the world and they are doing a great job.  Sadly, the level of their sacrifice has never been matched by the level of the Administration's planning, and the American people agree this war is not making America safer.

This unnecessary pre-emptive war has come at great cost.  Over 3,000 of our troops have lost their lives, and thousands more have suffered lasting wounds.  Since the war began, Congress has appropriated over $350 billion, and the United States has suffered devastating damage to our reputation in the eyes of the world.  The cost in lives and limbs, the cost in dollars, and the cost in reputation has been enormous."

Thanks for writing,
Ellen & Trish
