Cut-and-Run Liberal, and Proud of It

By Stephen Pizzo, NewsforReal.com

I want to be perfectly clear about this. We liberals really do want to cut and run.
I admit it. We are cut-and-run liberals, just as Karl Rove alleges. More than that, I am proud of it and encourage more Americans to join us.

We are liberals/progressives and, damn it, we want to cut and run.

We want to cut and run from the borrow and spend, borrow and spend economics of the GOP that have piled an additional $4 trillion in debt onto our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

We want to cut and run from the unholy alliance between the GOP and energy companies that has left us at the mercy of a bunch of medieval Islamic tribal leaders who run their own countries like feudal states and treat their own people -- especially their women -- worse than Americans treat farm animals.

We want to cut and run from a national health care system designed by and for giant health care and pharmaceutical interests, that enriches a few while leaving 45 million Americans without affordable health insurance.

We want to cut and run from a government that, over the past six years, has become not only increasingly closed to public scrutiny and accountability, but overtly hostile and suspicious of citizens who insist on either.

We want to cut and run from a style of governance that not only plays on fear and petty prejudices, but cultivates and exploits them for cheap political gain. From the cynical, dishonest, purposeful pitting of majority populations against minority groups on the grounds that they don't share "American values," and later denying responsibility for the entirely predictable destructive consequences of those tactics.

We want to cut and run from policies that view science and scientists as adversaries whose findings must sometimes be suppressed, while embracing, even endorsing, religious dogmas that have no basis in fact whatsoever.

We want to cut and run from GOP economic polices that have handed the already wealthy a couple of trillion dollars in tax cuts while leaving working Americans' payroll tax virtually untouched.

View Article  [FWD: Governor's Race] attention Phoebe at the Culver Campaign
Dear Guy:
I too share your concerns. As you know, I posted Ed's speech at the state convetion on the blog

Last week, I asked the Culver campaign to share their thoughts on why Chet's a better candidate than Nussle, but I've yet to receive a letter from them. I am ccing Erin Seidler, who runs the press office for the IDP, as well as the Culver Campaign, to let them know that I eagerly await some answers. Also, I am ccing the Blog (just found out how to do this, so let's hope it works..), so that your letter in it's entirety, along with any posisble responses, are posted for more people to see it.

As for Ed, I don't think he's going to have some kind of write-in campaign. I don't want to comment on what people should do, but I agree with you. You deserve some kind of answer.

Hi Sam,

I recently discovered your blog and have enjoyed reading the posts.  I have
a question for you about the current race for Iowa Governor.  I voted for Ed
Fallon and was disappointed that he did not get the nomination.

An article in the June 4, 2006 edition of the Omaha World-Herald concerning
the differences between the primary candidates made mention that Chet Culver
opposes civil unions for gay and lesbian citizens and is pro-death penalty.
My partner and I moved away from Nebraska to Iowa primarily because of
Initiative 416, passed in 2000.  We have done everything we can to protect
each other, but we worry that further legislation against us could undermine
our efforts.

I have emailed Chet's campaign office on 3 separate occasions asking for
clarification of these positions but have received no reply from them.

The Republican candidate for governor is one of the worst I have ever seen,
so I will certainly not vote for him.  I have heard all the arguments that I
cannot be a one (or two) issue voter.  But the civil unions issue affects me
directly.  When the one issue has that much of an effect on my life, I feel
I can be a one-issue voter.

So what is a progressive-minded citizen supposed to do with this race?  Does
Ed Fallon have any plans for a write-in candidacy?  Perhaps what I've read
about Chet Culver is inaccurate; if that's true I would like to hear that.

Thank you.

The Rise and Fall of the Minimum Wage

From the Center for Economic and Policy Research:
http://www.cepr.net/pressreleases/2006_06_19_graph.htm

The Rise and Fall of the Minimum Wage (1946-2006): The Federal Minimum Wage Is at Its Lowest Point in 50 Years

The federal minimum wage is at its lowest point in 50 years. Congress has not raised the minimum wage in a decade. As of December 2006, this will be the longest time Congress has ever gone without raising the minimum wage.

According to the Center for Economic and Policy Research, increasing the federal minimum wage to $7.25 per hour over the next 26 months — as proposed by Sen. Edward Kennedy in an amendment to the Department of Defense Authorization bill — would raise the annual earnings of the average full-time, full-year, minimum-wage worker by $1,520 (Boushey and Schmitt 2005).

Raising the minimum wage is only the first step in helping families to make ends meet. First, it is important to recognize that a substantial share of minimum wage workers are adults making significant contributions to the total family income. In the early 2000s, fewer than one-in-five minimum wage workers was under the age of 20 and half were between ages 25 and 54 (Boushey 2005). In 2002, minimum wage workers earned an average of 68 percent of their total family income (Chapman and Ettlinger 2004).
