Howard Dean Stands Up to Republican Machine in Iowa

Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier

By Todd Dorman

CEDAR RAPIDS - Democratic National Chairman Howard Dean kept up his frontal assault on Republicans Saturday and urged Iowa Democrats to go toe-to-toe with the GOP on "values'' issues.

"We are not going to be afraid to talk about moral values,'' the former Vermont governor told 500 Democrats gathered for the party's Hall of Fame banquet.  "If you match our moral values against their moral values, we win. The Bible talks about helping the poor 3,000 times. I have yet to find gay marriage mentioned anywhere in the Bible,'' Dean said.

Dean didn't back down Saturday.  "We need to be blunt and clear about the things we're going to fight for. And we are going to fight,'' Dean said. "I'm tired of lying down in front of this Republican machine.''

He said Democrats must win the debate on issues and mount an aggressive national campaign to counter GOP successes.  Democrats interrupted the speech several times to stand and applaud.

U.S. Rep. Leonard Boswell offered up Dean's autographed necktie in an impromptu auction. It fetched $1,100.  "I tell you what, we can use some of your passion. Bring it on,'' Boswell said.

GOVERNOR HOWARD DEAN BACK IN IOWA!

We were ecstatic!  There we were, on the 16th floor of the 5 Seasons Center in downtown Cedar Rapids.  The reception room had over 80 people waiting patiently.  With a beautiful view of Cedar Rapids around us, and hors-d'oeuvres in hand, we waited.  Some of those in attendance were (in no particular order) Phil Specht, Sally Williams, Caroline Vernon, Alta Price, Cliff Day, Chuck Galer, and a gala lineup of other loyal IOWA Democrats.

Finally LT. GOVERNOR SALLY PEDERSON arrived.  Shortly after, in strode GOVERNOR HOWARD DEAN and GOVERNOR TOM VILSACK.  The applause began and was heard often throughout the evening.

GOVERNOR DEAN's message was that we STILL HAD THE POWER to bring about necessary changes that include STATING WHAT WE STAND FOR.  He reminded us that spending time pointing out the current administration's faults should also be supplemented with touting our own important messages on, for example, a woman's right to determine her own health choices.

It was fabulous to see GOVERNOR DEAN again as well as other supporters of his.  We will have a longer post about this memorable evening with photos later this week.
