So, what did it take for you to go from one place to another today? Was it foot-power? Was it bicycle/leg power? Was it REAL horse-power, you know the four-legged kind? Or was it gas/oil/diesel etc. power?
As we progress towards that day when many of us will have to stay home because we cannot afford gasoline, what will we do? Or, when there has not been enough of that petroleum product delivered to our local gas stations, what will we do? Or, when the weather turns so bad for such an extended period of time that we cannot get to our jobs and schools and friends, what will we do?
For months I have just been putting information on this site and elsewhere that touches on our place in the world, our place in IOWA, and in our communities. My main impetus is for each of us to take a hard look at what we do every day and how it impacts others AND depletes our resources. As a means to educate others on the seriousness of matters concerning our health and existence, I have found many helpful books, publications, and web-sites.
Today, I will just put forth several of these sites so that you may choose one that sounds interesting. Recently, I happened upon www.ringoffireradio.com that is hosted by ROBERT F. KENNEDY, JR who is an ENVIRONMENTAL LAWYER.
Another is www.sustainability.net that I just happened to find today and have not had a chance to explore it fully, but it does look interesting.
www.loe.org stands for "LIVING ON EARTH" and airs on Public Radio weekly. This week's show addressed, among other things, a VEGGIE VAN that seems to be a real gas!
Another to check out is www.biodieselamerica.org There may be many of you out there looking for 4-H projects this year, so let's help the kids out with a GREEN PROJECT that says we care about ourselves, our resources, and others.
So, as you think about your place in the world, your state, and your community, take time to look at ALDO LEOPOLD's book, "A SAND COUNTY ALMANAC WITH ESSAYS ON CONSERVATION," published (1949) by Oxford University Press. You can also visit www.aldoleopold.org These will give insight to an extraordinary man of depth and vision regarding our use of land.
Last but not least is www.livinglandsandwaters.org that is about an outstanding, award winning young man in his mid-twenties who exemplifies activism. CHAD PREGRAKE is from the Quad City area and all of us who know him are proud to have such an outstanding person in our midst. I am amazed at his energy.
So check things out and report back….Let us know what YOU did this week to make a difference…Leave a comment please.
