BUSH TRIED TO INSTALL CRONY AT FLORIDA ELECTION BOARD

The Daily Mislead

George W. Bush has said "Every registered voter deserves to have confidence that the system is fair and elections are honest."[1] But according to a new report, the [pseudo-]pResident is doing all he can to once again rig the election in Florida.

According to the Miami Daily Business Review, a Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) appointee at the Broward County Board of Elections hired a law firm headed by two close cronies of [pseudo-]pResident Bush to fight any charges against it during the 2004 election. Specifically, the Broward Supervisor of Elections Brenda Snipes hired the law firm Blosser & Sayfie.[2] Justin Sayfie "is a former spokesman for Gov. Bush and currently is co-chair of the Bush/Cheney re-election campaign in Broward County." He is also a Bush Ranger (aka someone who has raised more than $100,000 for Bush's [re-selection] campaign).[3] James Blosser is also "a top fund-raiser for Bush's re-[s]election campaign."[4] Many observers expect the election will be extremely close in Florida and predict it will touch off litigation. County election supervisors and their legal teams could play a key role in deciding the election.

While Snipes has since been forced to fire the law firm,[5] it shows just how far the Bushes are willing to go to throw the Florida election again. Earlier this summer, Jeb Bush attempted to purge thousands of voters from the Florida voting rolls, but was stopped after public pressure overwhelmed the effort.[6] Additionally, Florida GOP operatives are going to naturalization offices to give new immigrants voter registration forms which are already pre-marked to register the voter as a Republican.[7]

 Smith Notices Sea Change

by Andrew Smith, Candidate, House District 40

This past week I've been doing a lot of door knocking, and I have to tell you, something is happening, change is happening, and it's big. People are angry, they are angry about the Medicare increases, they are angry about prescription drugs, they are angry that the cost of health insurance keeps going up and up and they want new leadership. They want Democratic leadership. I truly feel that the Medicare increase was the straw that broke the camel's back. I feel a real sea change, something big, and something I haven't seen before.

I'm telling you, I've been door knocking all summer, meeting with folks from all over District 40.  I've knocked on thousands of doors, but I now sense something different, a stronger resentment then I've ever seen. The tide is turning, and our campaign is surging, and whatever it was that happened to cause this change is something big.

Iowa Hit Hard by Medicare Increase

Des Moines Register

Some Iowans may cut back on their coverage, and the state faces having to pay more for Medicaid, officials say

Sharply higher Medicare premiums announced last week by the Bush administration will have a double-barreled impact on Iowa, say state health-care administrators.

Some elderly or disabled Iowans, health officials predict, will cut back on their medical coverage rather than pay the increase. And the state of Iowa will have to deal with an even bigger crisis in paying for Medicaid, the health-care umbrella for the poor.

"Sometimes, one more peanut breaks the cart," said Eugene Gessow, the state administrator overseeing Medicaid in Iowa. "At this point, our ability to absorb additional costs faces an enormous challenge."

...$11.60 more per month

The increase will cost Part B recipients $11.60 more per month - an additional $140 or so annually - starting in 2005, bringing the monthly premium to $78.20.

The Truth About September 11

By Bill Moyers, AlterNet.org

Much of the truth about 9/11 is now public, thanks to the Commission's report: Key government officials failed the system, and they failed the American people.

It has taken three years for the details of the terrorist plot of 9/11 to emerge. The fateful turns that led to the attacks have finally entered the public discourse. Their lessons, however, have yet to be learned.

The first lesson is that the highest officials in government did not want us to know the truth.

They already had the story they wanted Americans to believe: Nearly 3,000 people had died, we were assured, because the terrorists turned our liberties against us, had brazenly exploited our open society. According to this official view, the atrocities were inevitable, the plot so diabolical and its execution so precise that only a superhero could have prevented it.

It sounded right. For the American people, the terror seemed to have fallen out of that near-perfect September sky, out of the clear blue.

We now know otherwise.
