Hammer Tom DeLay: A Message from Howard Dean
Representative Tom DeLay of Texas needs to be stopped. He is at the center of a machine that launders corporate influence in our political process. And now his machine is at the center of investigations by a grand jury in Texas and the House Ethics Committee in Washington into ethics violations and criminal activity. But the DeLay racket reaches even into the Ethics Committee itself. We must act now to make sure the job gets done right. The House Ethics Committee must appoint an outside counsel to lead the investigation. Add your name to the call for accountability: http://www.democracyforamerica.com/stoptomdelay Four of the five Republicans on the House Ethics Committee, which will review the charges against DeLay next month, have received over $35,000 from an arm of the DeLay operation. They are in no position to conduct an independent investigation. The examination of Tom DeLay's political money machine should be free from the influence of that machine. That can only happen with an independent, outside counsel leading the probe. We will deliver your petition to the House Ethics Committee. And we will take your messages to Texas to give DeLay's constituents your thoughts about the man they will have the chance to vote out of office in November. Sign the petition now: http://www.democracyforamerica.com/stoptomdelay The charges against DeLay filed in the Ethics Committee include trading favors for contributions, laundering illegal corporate contributions to influence Texas legislative races, and improperly directing the Department of Homeland Security to conduct a political witch hunt against Texas Democrats. Tom DeLay has done more than any other person to construct a system where our representatives sell the privilege of writing legislation to the highest bidder. His contempt for his opponents and win-at-all-costs approach pollute our political life - and may have broken the law. Join the call for a proper investigation of Tom DeLay. Please forward this message to your friends and spread the word - we are tired of business as usual and we demand a real investigation into the man who has been called the "chief enforcer of company contributions to Republicans." Thank you. Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

Gay Wedding Announcement Reaches Small-town Iowa
This item was posted in the comments section of Blog for Iowa earlier today by SousyHawk, a Democratic activist and Paul Johnson for Congress supporter over at the U of I: The Register ran [this] bit in Borsellino's column: Panora native Tobin Wirt got married this summer, and his hometown paper - the Guthrie County Vedette - carried the announcement, with a photo. Wirt lives in Massachusetts, and he married Robert King. Scott Gonzales is the owner and editor of the paper, and he said this was a first. He didn't have a problem with it because Wirt got the info in within 90 days of the wedding "and that's our policy." According to the announcement: "Wirt is the son of Keith and the late Betty Wirt of Panora and is a 1973 graduate of Panora-Linden High and a 1979 graduate of UNI. King is the son of Lawrence and the late Jean King of Duxbury, Mass., and a 1980 graduate of the University of Massachusetts. The pair has operated restaurants on Cape Cod for two decades and recently sold their latest venture and are enjoying some time off." ------------- SousyHawk went on to say: Mr. Wirt posts on our "Hawkeye Report" site as "Grant Wood". Stop by and wish him congratulations! Click here. Thanks, Sousy! We sure will!

Our Fearful Mis-leader Mis-speaks Again!
Signing a defense spending bill yesterday, George W-for-I-Wonder-Where-he-got-his-education Bush declared that America's terrorist enemies "never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people" - then he added, "And neither do we." Bush often admits to being linguistically challenged. When asked about the comment, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said, "Even the most straightforward and plain-spoken people misspeak." McClellan earned his pay the hard way, keeping a straight face the entire time, although heaven appeared to have come crashing down when he called the mendacious Pinocchio "straightforward." Doctors Without Borders Leaves Afghanistan and Rumsfeld Leaves the Public Eye
Aid group Médècins Sans Frontières pulls out of Afghanistan TheOlympian.com . . . The Nobel Prize-winning medical relief group, also known as Doctors Without Borders, denounced the U.S. military's use of aid to persuade Afghans to snitch on insurgents, saying it risked turning all relief workers into targets. It was also dismayed that Taliban rebels tried to claim responsibility for the June 2 attack on its staff. "We feel that the framework for independent humanitarian action in Afghanistan at present has simply evaporated," said Kenny Gluck, MSF's director of operations. There is a "lack of respect for the safety of aid workers." (more) With War Losing Support, Rumsfeld Stages a Retreat CommonDreams.org WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld, once so popular as an administration spokesman for the Iraq war that President Bush dubbed him a "matinee idol," has reduced his public profile, trimming appearances as the war has turned from a positive for the Bush campaign into a potential liability. Critics, particularly on the left, have delighted in the shrinking Rumsfeld role. Now, supporters have weighed in as well, but not with delight. "He's our rock star," one senior administration official said Wednesday on condition of anonymity. "He should be out there." The man who gave daily progress reports at the Pentagon in the heat of the war has appeared only twice at Pentagon briefings since May. And the White House, which coordinates which administration officials appear on the networks' news-making Sunday talk shows, has not lined up a Rumsfeld interview for months, although a senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, denied that the White House did not want Rumsfeld speaking out.
