Iowa Physicians for Social Responsibility Convene September 11
The public is welcome Please consider joining us on September 11 in the Des Moines Botanical Center as we reassess our situation at home and abroad regarding the so-called "war on terrorism." Auspiciously timed and located in a lovely life-affirming space, this unique event will open with an interfaith memorial to all the victims of September 11 - here in the US and abroad. Our keynote speaker, Ambassador George Moose, will reflect on how US foreign policy is contributing to an increasingly dangerous and unstable global environment as this war enters its fourth year. From there, we will examine the impact on our health, environment and humanity, of the policies and programs pursued by this administration in our names. The second half of the day will be devoted to determining what each of us can do to help create policies and programs that more clearly reflect our needs for a healthy, sustainable, and more secure future. Fees for the conference include lunch and conference materials and help defray the costs associated with bringing in such an outstanding roster of speakers. If suggested fees represent a burden for anyone interested in participating, scholarships are available. For more information about the conference and the speakers, please visit our web site: www.iowa-psr.org. Project Mythbreaker in Iowa: DELIVERED!
This report came in today from Dr. Alta Price of Bettendorf, DFIA’s Project Mythbreaker coordinator: Democracy for Iowa has now coordinated delivery of "Myth Breakers for Election Officials" to all 99 Iowa Counties, as well as to Chet Culver's office. As far as I can tell, we are the only DFA group to have undertaken such an ambitious project to ensure fair elections in their state. Check out the first website below to see us listed as the contact group in Iowa. The second website is my personal favorite. Look at all the little gold stars we got! LOL List of organizations in each state http://www.votersunite.org/info/groups.asp Status of Iowa http://www.votersunite.org/takeaction/kickoff-participantsIA.asp Alta Price And boy, did Alta ever earn us those gold stars! In case you didn’t get the chance to read our report to DFA which was posted on Blog for America two weeks ago, here’s the rest of the Project Mythbreaker in Iowa story: Our next big project, [begun in April,] was through the non-partisan fair elections organization VotersUnite! VotersUnite! is run by Ellen Theisen, former Executive Director of VerifiedVoting.org. Ellen has written the quintessential handbook on the subject of touch-screen voting, called Myth Breakers for Election Officials, so Democracy for Iowa set out to print out and hand-deliver a copy of this tome to the county auditor in each of Iowa’s 99 counties. We had our big launch and got some press coverage thanks to Alta and her press release. [At that point, we had delivered to 19 Iowa counties.] In the end, Alta decided to go right to the source: The Iowa State Association of Counties (ISAC) Summer School. She printed up 100 copies [since the materials had been updated 3 times since we first set out delivering the booklets] along with the more recent findings about the ES&S system flaws, and had them delivered directly to the registration desk at the ISAC meeting with the help of the Scott County Auditor, Karen Fitzsimmons, and the Deputy Auditor of Clinton County, Betsy Smith. Alta had labeled each booklet with the name of the county so we could track them. Ultimately, we only received 12 of the booklets back, and heard reports that no one was listening to the speakers because they were too engrossed in reading Myth Breakers! [And, as Alta reported above, the remaining booklets have now been shipped off to the election officials in the appropriate counties!] Well done, Alta! We are so proud of all your hard work and your determination to make a difference in Iowa.

Cleland and Heinz in Iowa This Week
Former U.S. Senator Max Cleland, (D-GA), will be in Cedar Rapids on Friday, August 27. Cleland, a Vietman vet, will be joining John Kerry's band of brothers, men who actually served with Kerry, at the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids at 6:30pm. Hear the true story about John Kerry from those who served with him. Kerry has stood for veterans, and he'll fight for full, mandatory funding for V.A. health care. Tickets can be obtained through all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 319-363-1888 in Cedar Rapids. Also in Iowa this week: Andre Heinz, John Kerry's stepson, will be at the IMU in the Northwestern Room, Iowa City, at 4:30pm on Wednesday (tomorrow). Andre is a staunch environmentalist and works hard on his stepdad's campaign.

Iowan Advises Florida Election Officials
Quad-City Times Four years after Florida was at the epicenter of the 2000 presidential election upheaval, election personnel are working persistently on problems associated with the state’s controversial $25 million touch-screen, paperless voting system. Those involved include a University of Iowa professor and a former Quad-City resident. Douglas W. Jones, an associate professor of computer science at Iowa, is a consultant to the Miami-Dade County Elections Commission. Constance Andrew Kaplan, a 1971 graduate of Augustana College in Rock Island, is the county’s commissioner of elections, having been hired in July 2003. Jones has emerged as a national expert on computer election systems and security, and he passionately believes in making the voting process as fair, democratic and secure as possible. ...“I want voting systems that you can audit with the same rigor as the books of a corporation,” he said. “I want my vote counted as accurately as I want my bank to count my dollars, with the same quality.” (more) And in a related story . . . E-Voting on Trial in Maryland Campaign for Verifiable Voting in Maryland Dramatic Testimony Expected; Legitimacy of Election Hangs in Balance Annapolis, Maryland On Wednesday, August 25th, for the first time in the new technology's turbulent history, paperless electronic voting will be on trial for three days in the state capital. Progressing further than any other electronic voting suit in the nation, the suit Linda Schade et al. vs. Linda Lamone et al. calls into question the legality of paperless voting machines under Maryland law, which requires paper ballots and the ability to conduct a recount. Among the witnesses: Embattled Elections Chief Linda Lamone will be forced to testify under oath as to why the State Board of Elections purchased the machines against expert advice and when significant knowledge of the voting system's security vulnerabilites were evident. Computer security experts who authored the technical reports Lamone has taken refuge in will testify under oath re-stating their devastating critiques of Maryland's Diebold machines. A Montgomery County election judge will testify under oath about a hair-raising breakdown of Diebold voting machines in Maryland's March 2004 primary election - and tell how the state board harassed her for refusing to cover it up. "Once the facts are known, the court will understand why the public does not want to use these machines in November, said Linda Schade, plaintiff and Co-Founder of TrueVoteMD.org. "A democracy cannot function without the confidence of its citizens. I hope the court understands this and acts accordingly." Campaign for Verifiable Voting in Maryland www.TrueVoteMD.org |
