News from Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa
2004 Garage Sale Raises Money for PPGI’s Mission Thanks to all the volunteers, donors, staff members and shoppers who pitched in to make the 2004 Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa (PPGI) Spring Garage Sale such a success. The sale earned over $1300 for PPGI education and outreach efforts. PPGI’s Rosenfield Center Thrives on the South Side PPGI staff and patients alike are beginning to settle in to the new Rosenfield Center on Des Moines' south side. Jeff Smart, PPGI security and facilities manager reports that all is well at the new clinic. “Security issues are well under control, protestor activity has been very minimal and patients are pleased with the modern and convenient location,” said Smart. Rosenfield Center manager Todd Buchacker is grateful for the generosity that made the new clinic possible. “It’s great to be able to serve the community with such a beautiful new facility; it is not often that nonprofit organizations get to do such great work in such a great place,” Buchacker said. National Reaction to the Federal Abortion Ban Ruling The following is a brief summary of a few of the opinion pieces released after a San Francisco judge ruled the recent Federal Abortion Ban as unconstitutional. The summaries appear courtesy of Kaisernetwork.org. Family Planning Advocates of New York State: The group in a release "praised" the ruling, saying that without the decision, the ban "would have been left to the judgment of Attorney General John Ashcroft, who has repeatedly demonstrated his blatant disregard for personal privacy and women's reproductive health" (Family Planning Advocates of New York State release, 6/1). Planned Parenthood Federation of America: "In their zealous pursuit of this dangerous ban and their attempt to seize hundreds of confidential medical records, [the Bush] administration has squandered vast amounts of U.S. tax dollars to appease anti-choice extremists and fulfill an ideological agenda," PPFA President Gloria Feldt said in a release (PPFA release, 6/1). Republican Majority for Choice: "It's time for members of Congress to reject the small band of social reactionaries who" this year have introduced more than 100 pieces of legislation that would restrict abortion rights and "save the courts the time and expense of litigating these blatantly unconstitutional laws," RMC Executive Director Kellie Rose said in a release (RMC release, 6/1).

Don't forget to vote today!
Big primary turnout expected Iowa City Press-Citizen Voter turnout should be brisk in [today's] Democratic primary election to select three Johnson County supervisor candidates and a sheriff candidate, a county election official said. "Based on absentee requests, they are running above our previous primary, so we expect it to be at least as good as that," deputy auditor Dan Moen said. "I would expect turnout to be high, but it's hard to tell based solely on that." As of Thursday, six days before the primary, more than 1,150 people had requested absentee ballots. That's 856 more than the number of early voters in the 2002 primary and 617 more than the 2000 primary. (more) Primary elections [today] The Hawk Eye, Burlington, Iowa One U.S. Senator. One representative. Six state legislators, 11 county supervisors, four auditors and four sheriffs. Add it all up and you get one very busy primary election. And anyone can vote. Anyone who is registered, that is. The deadline to do that is already gone, so don't run down to the courthouse and try. It won't work. Otherwise, participating in Tuesday's party primaries is as simple as sunshine. Unfortunately, the experts forecast a gloomy turnout. When Des Moines County Auditor Carol Copeland called interest in the election "staggering," she meant it in a bad way. (more) Kinds of Elections TheIowaChannel.com General Elections - an election to fill public offices. Primary Elections - an election prior to the general election in which voters select the candidates who will run on each party's ticket. Primaries are also used to choose convention delegates and party leaders, and may be open or closed. Open Primary - an election that permits voters to choose on Election Day the party primary in which they wish to vote. They may vote for candidates of only one party. (A blanket or "free love" primary is a type of open primary. In the voting booth you mark a ballot that lists the candidates for nomination of all the parties, and thus you can help select the Democratic candidate for one office and the Republican candidate for another.) Closed Primary - the selection of a party's candidates in an election limited to registered party members. Prevents members of other parties from "crossing over" to influence the nomination of an opposing party's candidate. (more) Subliminal message: Don't forget to vote today! |
