Iowa's District 5 Congressional Primary - Know Thy Candidates
With the Iowa Democratic Primary coming up next week on Tuesday, June 8th, I thought it might be helpful for us 6 or 7 registered Democrats in Congressional District 5 to know a little something about who is trying to take on that shameful, party-line-voting neo-con Steve King (R-5th). There are 3 candidates on the primary ballot: Joyce Schulte of Creston, populist, education services worker, and Vilsack appointee to the Agricultural Development Authority Board. Read more about Joyce Schulte here and here. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Sal Mohamed of Sioux City, engineer and naturalized U.S. citizen from Egypt. Read more about Sal Mohamed here and here. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Gene Blanshan of Panora, farmer, former history teacher, and former 5-term Iowa State Representative. Read more about Gene Blanshan here and here. Word on the street has it that the race is competitve, with Schulte and Blanshan in contention.

Howard Dean: Electronic Voting -
Not Ready For Prime Time Here's Gov. Dean's first column with the Cagle Cartoons syndicate. By Howard Dean In December 2000, five Supreme Court justices concluded that a recount in the state of Florida's presidential election was unwarranted. This, despite the desire of the Florida Supreme Court to order a statewide recount in an election that was decided by only 537 votes. In the face of well-documented voting irregularities throughout the state, the U.S. Supreme Court's decision created enormous cynicism about whether the votes of every American would actually be counted. Although we cannot change what happened in Florida, we have a responsibility to our democracy to prevent a similar situation from happening again. (more)

Well, She's Not A Progressive, But She IS A Democrat . . . and She Won! Woo-hoo!
In the battle between Heaven and Heck in South Dakota yesterday, Stephanie Herseth and the Democrats squeaked by with a win. Were you with one of the busloads of folks who traveled from Iowa to help? Send in your story to Blog for Iowa. Final tally (100% of the precincts reporting): Stephanie Herseth (D) - 50.5% (131,491) Larry Diedrich (R) - 49.5% (128,722) Herseth Takes the House KSFY Sioux Falls - Aberdeen - Pierre Nearly seven hours after the polls in eastern South Dakota closed, Democrat Stephanie Herseth greeted her supporters from a podium to thank them for their support and accept victory in her race for the U.S. House. Shortly before two Wednesday morning, Congresswoman-elect Herseth ended the long campaign road of the past six months. She promised South Dakotans she would be vigilant in supporting military and veterans' affairs, working for prescription drug reform, fighting for senior citizens' issues, exploring economic development and pursuing agricultural interests. House Seat AP Story, Newsday SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Stephanie Herseth, a lawyer who left the East Coast for a career in politics in her home state, narrowly defeated a Republican former lawmaker Tuesday in a special congressional election that was closely watched by national parties looking for momentum heading into November. Herseth will immediately fill the seat of Bill Janklow, who went to jail over a deadly auto accident. With all but three precincts reporting, Herseth led with 51 percent, or 131,672 votes, to 49 percent, or 128,888 votes for Larry Diedrich, a farmer and former head of the American Soybean Association. Herseth's advantage amounted to 2,774 votes out of more than 260,000 cast. "We ran a positive, truthful campaign based on issues, not negative attacks," Herseth told a room of cheering, chanting supporters early Wednesday. She vowed to "always do what's right for the entire state." (more) |
