Call to Action: Write Senators Harkin and Grassley re The Reimportation of Drugs from Canada
Today, The Progress Report quotes The Hill (subscription only), who reports that lawmakers may finally have "lined up the 60 votes needed to get a prescription-drug reimportation bill through the Senate, which some say could lead the White House to change its position on the controversial issue." Reimportation of drugs from Canada has gained massive popular support in recent months, as Americans have grown increasingly angry at drug prices pushed up by the powerful pharmaceutical lobby. Write to Senators Harkin and Grassley and ask them to support the reimportation of drugs from Canada. If you have time to write to only one senator, write to Grassley, who is self-satisfied and smug about the ridiculous windfall for the pharmaceutical companies that is the new Medicare bill. To write Senator Harkin, go here: http://www.senate.gov/~harkin/contact/contact.cfm To write Senator Grassley, go here: http://www.senate.gov/~grassley/webform.htm

DFA/DFIA Meet Up is Tomorrow!
(and Rapid Response) Alison posted this reminder on Blog for America this morning. Thought I'd share it with you. It seems like only yesterday I was listening to the Governor answering questions at the last Meet Up. DFA Meet Ups are incredible because they are about neighbors and strangers coming together for the betterment of their country. The action items at Meet Ups have had an incredible impact on American politics and this month will be no different. The agenda for tomorrow includes: * Planning for your Candidate Forum at the July Meet Up * Planning how to spread the Count Every Vote Petition in your area * June 19th Bridge the Health Care Gap events * Brainstorm 5 ways to take your country back this summer * Local action items Make sure that you are signed up to attend your local Meet Up. Posted by Alison Stanton at 09:52 AM And this came in from Liz Herbert of Rapid Response Network (do we REALLY have to take the name "Dean" out of everything we do?). Liz, who lives in Florida, has had no little success with her own Rapid Response group in Florida. As Liz writes: A well-functioning state group is like a GOLD MINE for the state - we used ours in Florida to get legislation defeated that was an end-around on the effort to mandate paper ballots. But we can't really support 50 states from outside the state, so we're doing our best to build each effort inside. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Liz has asked the DFA State Groups to spread the word about Rapid Response at our Meet Ups tomorrow. Rapid Response Network, a 1,500 member national network of citizens, dedicated to insuring the political dialog that takes place in the media is fair and accurate, is ALIVE & WELL (Rapid Response - Iowa). We are turning our attention now to insuring that strong state groups are in place across the country to respond to inaccuracies in local papers leading up to November. Some state groups are vital and busy, and may only need more assistance with writing action items, or researching. Others lack a state coordinator and haven't grown as they might. Please sign up for your state's Rapid Response Team and take a look at where it is. This is an effort made strong by many small contributions - consider how you might help. A strong state team can insure factual corrections are made across the publications in your state, both in the national races and in supporting local candidates, including - notably - the ones endorsed by your groups and by DFA. If any in your group have any questions, have them contact Liz at rapidresponsenetwork@earthlink.net. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Dean Rapid Response - Iowa is very fortunate to have two dedicated co-coordinators, DFIA Founding Member Trish Nelson and Ellen Ballas. Please go here to join the Iowa Rapid Response team. We have the power! And be sure to mention Blog for Iowa at your Meet Ups, too! Thanks!

Happy Anniversary!
Blog for Iowa is Two Months Old! OK, I promise I won't do this every month, but we're so new, I just had to do it one more time. Pull out the bragging rights for all our DFIA members who have been working so diligently to spread the word about Blog for Iowa! More Potentially Interesting Statistics To recap from May 1st, our one-month anniversary: Distinct Hosts Served: This is a count of individual computers that accessed at least one page of Blog for Iowa during any one day or month. By "distinct" they mean that if the same computer accesses Blog for Iowa more than once, it will still count as only one computer. This figure can be used to estimate the number of readers, but it counts computers, not people. Distinct Hosts Served in April, 2004: 2830 Distinct Hosts Served in May, 2004: 4314 Number of Page Views in April, 2004: 7362 Number of Page View in May, 2004: 13,425 Average Number of Hosts Served Per Day in April, 2004: 94 Average Number of Hosts Served Per Day in May, 2004: 139 Biggest Day: April 21, Hosts Served = 203, Page Views = 411 Biggest Day: May 3, Hosts Served = 276, Page Views = 463 Number of Articles Posted in April: 97 Number of Articles Posted in May: 103 Most Viewed Topic in April: Photos Most Viewed Topic in May: It was a tie! Far and away, these two topics led the pack: Candidates and Iowa in the News. Well, I guess we know what people are coming to Blog for Iowa for! * I was informed about a week ago by our host company, BlogHarbor.com, that we were blowing our starter package out of the water because of the amount of traffic. So, we've upgraded to the larger package. BlogHarbor also told me that as far as traffic goes, Blog for Iowa is near or at the top of the heap of all the blogs using the blogware system. They informed me that the number of blogs on the system is in the low thousands. You just can't keep those Dean supporters down! Of course, we're nothing compared to the blog of the mothership, Blog for America, but we're holding our own for a little blog. Now, if we could only get more people to post comments! * Just a few other things to update you on. You may have noticed that I finally figured out how to post a photo. The key was to use a different browser. The photo post feature does not work for me when I use Internet Explorer, so I switched to Mozilla. Far superior. However, the remove a photo feature does not work on Mozilla, so I have to use IE for that! It's always something, but I am getting better at figuring out how to work around the little buggy things like that. And Alison over at Blog for America finally has the State Group listserv up and running, which means that the State Groups have a means of instant communication. This has been very helpful as we are no longer stuck in No Man's Land. Lastly, just yesterday, Blog for America posted a photo of Howard Dean in a Hawaiian shirt. I kid you not. Go here to see it. Surely, you didn't expect me to stay on topic, did you? What kind of a blog would that be? LOL Many thanks to those of you who have turned in articles and suggestions for Blog for Iowa. You make my job a whole lot easier and I appreciate your help. Also, many thanks to all of you who have been promoting Blog for Iowa with buttons, stickers, and flyers (available on the right sidebar). Whatever you're doing, it's sure working!

Environment: Large Livestock Operations in Iowa
A Des Moines Register analysis of state records found that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources approved the construction of 110 new hog confinement sites and confinement expansions that will sidestep permit requirements under a sweeping new law passed by the Legislature this year. County-by-county lists of new last-minute projects Detailed maps of existing confinements Confinement Concerns Round Up Study links hog odor, weak immune system University of North Carolina researchers, in a small but groundbreaking study, have found that stress from hog odors apparently suppresses the immune systems of confinement neighbors. Hog odor battles head to court Disputes over hog confinements are spawning a record number of lawsuits brought by Iowans who say they've too long been powerless in the fight to stop the spread of large-scale pork production. Monitor county lakes, too Counties that have declined the state's offer to test their beach water for fecal bacteria this summer may be afraid of getting a black eye if results are bad. Editorial: Clean water? It's up to Iowans News that up to 600 hog producers haven't filed manure-management plans is maddening, but not just for the obvious reason. |
