Please write or call Gov. Vilsack and ask him to veto the "fetus death" bill. The Fetus Death Bill, which makes it a crime as serious as first-degree murder to kill an unborn child, has passed both the Iowa Senate and the Iowa House. The bill will briefly go back to the Senate due to a technicality, and then will land on the desk of Gov. Tom Vilsack. It is by no means certain that Gov. Vilsack will veto this bill, which chips away at reproductive rights and mirrors a bill passed recently by the extreme-right-wing-controlled Congress. Some Democrats in the Iowa Legislature object to the bill on the grounds that it grants legal rights to a fetus - rights that are not granted in any other area. For example, a fetus cannot get a Social Security number and cannot be deducted on the parents' income tax forms. Read more about it here. Call the Governor’s Office at (515) 281-5211. Or write to: Office of the Governor Thank you for participating in Democracy.

Gov. Tom Vilsack has a mixed record on reproductive rights * In 2000, 2001 and 2002, Vilsack vetoed legislation that would have required women be given certain information before having abortions. Two of the bills would have required such information to be provided at least 24 hours in advance. * In March 2002, Vilsack issued an executive order telling the Department of Public Health to establish a system for distributing health information to women seeking abortions, but without any criminal penalties for doctors who fail to pass the information along. * In May 2001, Vilsack signed into law a measure prohibiting university student health centers from using state money to provide RU-486, also called mifepristone or the "abortion pill." First, I'd like to give a shout out to all the new Iowa Meet Up members who are visiting the Blog for Iowa for the first time today. Welcome!
The results of our first Blog for Iowa poll are in: some 70.5% of the people who voted preferred to have a photo of Howard Dean on the Blog for Iowa site. I copied this photo of Gov. Dean off of Blog for America back in November, 2003. The photo was taken by John Pettitt, the official Dean campaign photographer, while Gov. Dean was speaking before a congregation in Harlem at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church on November 23, 2003. This photo has always been one of my favorites because of the colors and the majesty of the composition. You may think that I did something to the coloring of this photo because when you click on the link above to see the original, the coloring seems very different. But I didn't. When this picture was originally posted on BFA, it had more of a yellowish cast to it--probably why I liked it. So, I cropped the photo and sent it to John Pettitt. He gave his permission to use the photo. So, many thanks to John. You will see his photo credit and a link to his website on the left sidebar. Also, I'd like to thank Demetrius at People-Powered Graphics, who added the white trim to the photo for me - three different times - as I played around with sizing and placement. My inadequate software would not let me do it. That Demetrius is a real gem! I've placed another poll up on the left sidebar for you to cast a vote regarding your opinion of the photo we are using. I am pleased to announce that we have filled the positions of DFIA Meet Up Coordinator and DFIA DeanCorps Coordinator. I hope to introduce you to these ladies some time this week yet. Plus, we have filled the position of County Coordinator for the following counties: Buena Vista, Cerro Gordo, Dallas, Jefferson, Polk, Scott, and Warren. If you would like to apply for the position of DFIA County Coordinator for your county, please go here to read about the application procedure. In looking over the Blog for Iowa webstats, I see that since we went up on April 1, we have been averaging over 100 hits a day. That is recorded as "distinct hosts served," meaning the number of different computers that are hitting the site. As for page views, we've had 2,143 in the first week of existance. Of course, half of those are probably my refreshing over and over every time I make a change! I also noticed that one of our highest traffic times is between 8am and 11am, and again between noon and 3pm. There's a bit of a surge between 5am and 8am, so one of my goals is to put up some fresh material every morning for those early morning folks. Looks like today, I'm going to meet that goal. Good Morning, Blog for Iowa! |

The following urgent request is from Karen Kubby, director of the Emma Goldman Clinic in Iowa City:
Friends of reproductive rights,
Please take the time to communicate to Governor Vilsack to veto the Unborn Victim of Violence Act, S.F. 2254, which was passed yesterday. Contact information is below.
This act changes the word "fetus" and replaces it with "unborn child" which would be defined as a person, that "includes a member of the species homo sapiens, at ANY stage of development when carried in the womb or after birth (emphasis added).
This bill would create separate penalties for injury or death to the fetus, defining the fetus as a separate person. You can view S.F. 2254 at
View S.F. 2254 here.
Iowa law currently allows for a separate charge for the unlawful termination of pregnancy, a Class C felony.
The intention of this bill is not to create enhanced penalties for those who perpetrate violence against pregnant women. The intention of this bill is to begin the definition of the fetus as a person with full rights. Even though the bill provides an exception for legal abortion, it can eventually lead to the US Supreme Court overturning Roe, which states that the fetus
is not be viewed as a person under the law.
Governor Vilsack needs to hear from us very soon. He might only have until next week to veto S.F. 2254.
1. Roe explicitly says that a fetus is not a person.
2. Iowa law already allows for a separate penalty for unlawful termination of pregnancy.
3. Enhanced penalties for violence against pregnant women is a better legal route for accountability than creating fetal personhood that can lead to erosion of women's rights in the future.
"Please veto the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. Iowa already allows for a separate penalty for unlawfully terminating a pregnancy, a class c felony.
Signing this bill does nothing to further accountability to those who are violent towards pregnant women. What it does is create a legal conversation to create fetal rights, which will eventually make women invisible and unable to lawfully control their fertility."
The Honorable Tom Vilsack
