View Article  An Intriguing New Iowa PAC

Dave Inbody, one of the Founding Members of DFIA, has started up a new Iowa political action committee.  Although we are required to say that DFIA has no official relationship with Dave's PAC and that DFIA does not endorse the PAC, Dave has put a lot of time and effort into getting this intriguing PAC off the ground, so we asked him to tell us about it.

New State PAC Created to Support Legislative Candidates

Fundraising requirements and character assassinations have led dedicated, community leaders to opt out of political life and cause voters to turn away from the process.  The departure of well-intentioned people has left our society in the hands of those with less altruistic designs.  Howard Dean's presidential campaign gave volume and depth to a new voice.  A large number of people concerned about where the country is heading are struggling to find a means to impact its direction.  Dean's campaign showed that campaign fundraising no longer needs to rely on large contributions from the same tired sources.  There is a better way.  He inspired a grassroots movement to raise money at its base in small segments.  Howard Dean has asked us to carry the torch forward and shine it in our own communities.

In an effort to assist this movement in Iowa, a group of us have formed Citizen Whip, a new state political action committee.  Our focus is to gain a Democratic majority in the Iowa House and Iowa Senate.  To do so, we need to win five house and five senate seats currently held by Republicans.  Following in the Dean campaign's footsteps, we seek to raise an average of $100 from 1,000 donors.  This will provide $10,000 to each of ten Democratic challengers, five in the House and five in the Senate.  We are choosing high caliber candidates in extremely competitive districts for whom our additional support could be the difference between victory and defeat.

A website, www.citizenwhip.com, will be rolled out at the five Democratic district conventions this Saturday, April 24th.  The site will allow contributors to donate to our Top Ten candidates, as well as any additional Democratic candidates who are committed to bringing the concerns of their constituents to the state legislature.

If this is to succeed, we need your help.  You were the heart of the Dean movement.  You have been inspired to get involved and stay involved in the process. You know what is at stake.  Spread the word about the PAC and support those incredible candidates fighting to return the government to the people of Iowa.

The New DFIA Recruiting Flyer

The final, approved version of the new DFIA Recruiting Flyer is now available.  If you have a previous version from a day or two ago, please download the final version here.

This flyer can be used as a tool to spread the word about DFIA, who we are, what we intend to accomplish, and how we intend to accomplish it.  This final version is a collaborative effort on the part of 8 DFIA members who provided their valuable input, and it shows.  I think what the team has come up with really discribes DFIA and our mission accurately.

You can download the DFIA flyer and the DFIA sign up sheet from the Flyers component on the right sidebar of Blog for Iowa.  Both forms are in Word doc format so you can add your local information to the bottom (that is, unless we hear differently from our lawyer).

Democracy for Iowa

Healing the Country by Electing Progressive Candidates

Democracy for Iowa is a progressive political action grassroots organization that seeks to elect, to statewide and local offices in Iowa, socially-progressive and fiscally-responsible candidates who exude personal integrity.  We are the Iowa "State Group" of Democracy for America, the political action committee run by former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean.

We Believe

We believe when we, the ordinary citizens of the United States, rise up and demand an end to the huge corporate giveaways, the damaging, outrageously-large tax cuts for the wealthy, and the overriding selfishness of the special interests, that we will be able not only to put the well-being of our fellow ordinary citizens at the forefront of policy decisions, but that we will be able to accomplish the following goals in a fiscally-responsible manner:

1) health care for all;
2) investment in children - education, pre-natal health care, social support for families;
3) environmental protection;
4) equal rights under the law;
5) a balanced budget; and
6) a national security policy which treats the world as a community rather than a plaything, and which both protects America and our fellow citizens, but does not impinge upon our civil liberties.

We intend to make this happen by:

1. recruiting and encouraging progressive candidates to run for office at every level in the State of Iowa and in Iowa's Congressional races. We will help them find the resources to campaign successfully with small donations from grassroots supporters in order to begin to break the stranglehold special interests have on the political process;

2. developing strategic partnerships with other progressive organizations and political initiatives in Iowa to maximize resources for candidate and grassroots recruitment, training, and organization.

3. bringing new people into politics and training them to stay active; and

4. reclaiming the media from the corrupting influences of multi-national corporations, right-wing bias and cronyism, and infusing them with the voice of ordinary citizens.

Publicize Your Meet Up Now!

Hello to All Iowa Meet Up Hosts and Dean Friends,

My action plan for this month is to get a notice in all our local publications about our May Meet Up. Perhaps this is old news to you, but previously we here were very busy with the actual campaign in Iowa; and then with the campaign elsewhere, and then after the campaign we got switched over to DFA 2.0 and now we are finally settling in as DFIA and the local Meet Up groups....anyway, we have never advertised our Meet Ups here before...or not in ALL the publications.

So, this is my suggestion to you to work on doing this in your local area, as well.  Simply create a report that will tell all -- the Location, the Date and the Time, the name of your group, a short write-up about what you are doing (either what your group is about, i.e. DFIA or if you are having a special event or speaker, you can probably get more coverage) and finally a contact name and phone number. Call all your local publications and radio/TV stations and get the info on how and where to send this to them...and the time ahead that they require it for publication. (All publications here have given me an email address to send them my info.)

I am going to view some of the event listings online, and then compose what our D4QC Meet Up listing will say for this month. I hope that you will all be able to do the same, and that your Meet Ups continue to thrive. One way to help them to thrive is to advertise what we are doing, so we can gain even more supporters, because I am sure there are many out there who are unaware of our existence and certainly there should be some that would want to join us!

Also save to your computer copies of the flyer and signup sheet which Linda has created and posted at the BFIA site (right sidebar). My suggestion is that once you have the signup sheet made local to your site, and you make several copies....that you then attach an address label to the back side....then they can complete the form, fold it up and add a stamp and mail it to you. Also the flyer with the DFIA info on it...to that at the bottom, I have added the Meet Up info for our next local DFIA Meet Up....so they can join us there, as well. Always keep these with you, so that you can hand them out and get new members Everywhere You Go!

Also, I just had some custom-designed buttons made up for us.  You can see the designs on the right sidebar of Blog for Iowa.  Click on the link to go to the order website.  Tell Claire which custom button/s you want.  She already has the designs handy.  She also has another cute little button that says Vote for Democracy.

And don't forget, DFIA is changing our Meet Ups to the first Thursday after the first Wednesday of the month because of church night.  But this change will not be reflected on the national Meet Up site - all the more reason to spread the word!

Hope this finds everyone well and READY for the District Conventions on Saturday!
