New DFIA Flyers and Stickers Now Available

I made up a couple of flyers this evening.  Both are in Word doc format and so are customizable if you'd like to add your local group's information.  I also added the flyers to the "Download Flyers Here" component on the right sidebar of Blog for Iowa.

The DFIA Flyer gives a description of what we believe and how we plan to implement it.  It also includes information about Blog for Iowa, the central information hub of Democracy for Iowa.

The DFIA Sign Up Sheet can be filled out at local events by interested activists.  You will collect their information and enter it onto the Democracy for Iowa membership list.  For more information on how to do that, contact Linda.

The DFIA Stickers were created by Darrell Lewis for use at the District Conventions, or anywhere that you plan to spread the word, for that matter.  Use Avery Form 5267 with this.  These are small and you get 80 per sheet.  (The stickers say Democracy for Iowa and then include the blog URL.)  These stickers are perfect for putting on name tags or on booklets - basically on anything ANYONE will take home that won't land in the trash.

You can only see one sticker on the page in this file, but it will print out the whole page.

Thanks, Darrell!

Calling All Dean Delegates!

The DFIA Dean Delegate District Coordinators are trying to make contact with all Dean delegates and alternates to Saturday's District Conventions.

If you are a Dean delegate or alternate in District 2 or 5, please send me your contact information - full name, address, and phone number - and I will forward your information to your Coordinator.

If you are a Dean delegate or alternate in District 3 or 4, please read below for further instructions from your DFIA Dean Delegate District Coordinator.

The information provided for District 4 by Darrell Lewis applies to ALL Dean delegates and alternates (except for the location, of course.)

You can find the location of your District Convention here.  Thank you.

Dear Dean District 4 Delegates and Alternates:

Congratulations on your convictions and continuing to support Gov. Howard Dean.  I am the District 4 Dean Delegate Coordinator for Democracy for Iowa, which is affiliated with Gov. Dean's Democracy for America.

First, I want to encourage all of you, both delegates and alternates, to attend the District Convention in Ames on April 24.  If, however, you will be unable to attend, please sign the Alternate Designation Form on the back page of your District Convention booklet (leave it attached) and give the booklet to a Dean Alternate you know who wants to attend or send it to me (signed of course) at 119 Fletcher Drive, Clear Lake, Iowa 50428.  Call me if you have any questions about this at 641.357.0627.

Second, I ask each of you to look for the Dean Delegate table at the District Convention to sign in and pick up a Dean name tag.  Please do this before the convention starts at 10:00 AM.  This is VERY important so we can get a count of delegates to know our viability level.  We have little room to spare to secure the 15% to gain one national delegate.  We can use some help at the District Convention starting at 8:30 AM to set up and staff both the Dean Delegate table and the DFIA table.  Please give me a call if you can help.

Third, the undecided and Gephardt delegates clearly will not be viable.  Please contact any of them you know and ask them to at least register as a Dean delegate to insure our viability.  The delegate handbook has a list of delegates.  Also, we had some slippage at some County Conventions where Dean delegates moved to other candidates.  If you know some of these people, please ask them to register as a Dean Delegate.  They are free to change their preference at the time of registration.

Fourth, Democracy for Iowa (DFIA) needs coordinators in many counties.  Please stop by the DFIA table at the convention to join our group and to learn about being a county coordinator.  You may want to go to
www.blogforiowa.com to learn more about DFIA.

Thanks in advance for all you do.

Is A True Progressive Agenda Possible?

'Twas a busy and wacky weekend, working on a musical project for a friend and other sundry tasks. So nothing really new to rant on this morning, except the anticipation of the District 3 Democratic Party convention this coming weekend. The buzz is that there actually may be enough delegates committed to Howard Dean to be viable; that is, have an official presence at the state convention. Remember, Dean has "suspended his campaign," but has not yet released his delegates.

At the county conventions, there was considerable pressure for the Dean people to join up with John Kerry, but a number of county Dean delegations decided to pool their numbers with other candidates for the purpose of influencing party principle. In Polk County, for example, Dean delegates elected at the precinct caucuses aligned with people who were committed to Dennis Kucinich.

For the record, at the county convention your correspondent advocated joining with Kerry in a sea of party unity. But that was before it became known that the Presumptive Democratic Party Nominee was strongly indicating Clintonesque center-right leanings (see "The Call of the Bratwurst" published on this blog on Saturday).

So in the interest of full disclosure, I freely admit to flip-flopping on this issue of whether to insist on a progressive agenda -- which some argue will attract dormant Dems who voted for Ralph Nader in 2000 and sat out 2002 -- or to abandon progressivism entirely to back a center-right Kerry, who will try to appeal to the great uncommitted.

What happens if we do this? Would progressivism permanently die in this country, or just take a holiday till things right themselves? How long might that holiday last (see the unending "war on terrorism")? Is a truly progressive agenda of national health insurance, actual oversight of megabusiness, gay civil unions and however more you can add -- ever possible for this country? We'll examine these issues in the days ahead.

The IDP's got spunk.  I like spunk.

BUSH CAMPAIGN BILLED FOR CAMPAIGN TRAVEL DONE ON TAXPAYER’S DIME

(DES MOINES) -  The Iowa Democratic Party presented a bill to the Republican Party of Iowa Wednesday, asking for repayment of tax payer dollars used to pay for President George Bush’s campaign.

IDP staff presented an invoice to the GOP office, billing Bush for millions spent on campaign travel, including his planned stop in Des Moines [last] Thursday.

"Instead of worrying about the 2.5 million jobs lost on his watch, pResident Bush is flying around the country at taxpayer expense worried about one job - his own," said [IDP Chair Gordon] Fischer.

DEMOCRATIC LEGISLATORS: BUSH HAS BROUGHT IOWA NOTHING BUT MISERY

(DES MOINES) -  A group of Iowa lawmakers gathered on the steps of the Iowa Capitol [last] Tuesday, to spotlight the troubles of the middle class and the havoc the Bush Administration has wreaked on American families.

“Middle class Iowans are having a harder time making ends meet,”  said State Senator Matt McCoy  (D-Des Moines.) “Although pResident Bush says his tax cuts and economic policies are helping the middle class, he is costing the average Iowa family $19,410 per year.”

McCoy and his fellow lawmakers cited a recently released report on the Middle Class Misery Index. The Middle Class Misery Index combines seven different indicators: median family income, college tuition, health care costs, gasoline costs, bankruptcies, the homeownership rate and private-sector job growth.  In the last three years, the Index fell 13 points – the largest three-year fall on record

According to Representative Janet Petersen (D-Des Moines), job loss has had a devastating effect on Iowa families.  “During the Bush Administration, Iowa has seen over 29,000 manufacturing jobs disappear.  8300 Iowans have exhausted their benefits,” Petersen said.  “The only jobs that have been created are low-paying service jobs.  Those don’t pay families bills.”

Vilsack weighs fight on gay appointee

Boston.com

Governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa is exploring whether he can skirt a Senate panel's vote and install an openly gay lawyer to the state education board despite a narrow rejection of the appointment following a divisive two-day debate in the state capital.

The Senate Education Committee voted, 24 to 22, against the appointment of Jonathan Wilson, a contract and real estate lawyer at one of Iowa's top firms who previously served on the Des Moines school board before a defeat in 1995 after admitting he was gay. Three Republicans joined 19 Democrats Tuesday in favor of Wilson's appointment. All of the no votes were cast by Republicans.

"One has to ask the question: Who's next?" Wilson said in an interview after the vote. "Will it be the Jews because they're not Christian? Will it be the Catholics because they're not Protestant? I believe it is an example of grown-up bullying and name-calling that we see on school playgrounds."
