Dear God, Please Help Us: Rants Considers Run for Governor

by Charlotte Eby, Mason City Globe Gazette

DES MOINES — Iowa House Speaker Christopher Rants hesitates to talk about the idea that he might run for governor in 2006 and insists he's focused on the upcoming legislative session.

But Rants, a Sioux City Republican, said he can't help but think that he'd do a better job than Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack, who has said he will not seek re-election.

"Everybody that sits in the speaker's chair thinks about it, and I think about it, I think about it a lot," Rants said about a possible gubernatorial campaign.

He names two other potential candidates as front-runners in a Republican primary if they decide to run — Des Moines lawyer Doug Gross, the party's gubernatorial nominee in 2002, and U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle of Manchester.

Rants said the fund-raising capabilities of those two would make his own prospects more difficult.

To help, we've compiled a Media Reform Activist Toolkit that provides information, ideas, and resources for taking concrete actions for media reform. These are ways to put your knowledge and energy to work.

We'll mail you a toolkit free of charge — as long as you promise to use it!
