Kerry Can Win Ohio: A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT

Kerry Can Win Ohio: A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
International Labor Communications Association
The media has collapsed and Kerry has conceded, but we don't have to.
According
to CNN, Bush is ahead in the count in Ohio by 136,221. According to the
Toledo Blade, Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell has said the number
of provisional ballots could be about 175,000. Blackwell also told the
Blade that in the last election 90 percent of the provisional ballots
ended up being declared valid and being counted, a figure also reported
by CBS News Legal Analyst Andrew Cohen.
There is
good reason to believe that the provisional ballots are
disproportionately for Kerry. This is because many of them are the
result of Republicans challenging voters at the polls.
Therefore, Kerry can win, and we need to demand that every vote be counted.
The
provisional ballots are expected to be counted in 10 days. Meanwhile,
state law allows Republican and Democratic challengers to examine the
envelopes and to challenge their eligibility to be counted.
We need
massive public pressure in Columbus, Ohio, to demand a fair count. If
you can't go to Ohio, call the Democratic National Committee at
202-863-8000 and tell them that you want the count monitored. Send them
an Email on this page:
http://www.democrats.org/contact
Write letters to the editors of your local newspapers.
Call your local radio and television stations.
Write or call your Congress Members and other elected officials.
Tell them all we want an accurate count.
In
addition, numerous possible cases of Republican wrongdoing in Ohio are
being investigated, and we must be prepared to act quickly and in great
numbers. Various such cases in Florida four years ago were discovered
too late.
There
are numerous complaints from Ohio of lines at the polls being longer in
heavily Democratic precincts, also a result of Republican challengers
and part of the Republicans' plan. Other complaints include rejected
registrations, polls not open on time, and voters turned away.

We may also need to demand investigation of the voting machines in
Ohio. A year ago the head of Diebold, the company that produced the
machines, boasted of his intent to help Bush carry Ohio.

A Thank You To Our Candidates
Blog for Iowa and Democracy for Iowa
would like to issue a heartfelt thank you to all of our
candidates. We thank you for putting yourselves out there in
spite of the fact that you knew it meant you'd get slimed by the Rove
machine. We thank you for giving the progressive movement a face and a
voice. And we thank you for all your countless hours of hard work.
We'd
also like to thank all of the staff members, the activists, and the
volunteers who worked so hard to try to rescue this state and this
country from the clutches of the destructive GOP.
This is only the beginning.
I've
placed a new link on the top right sidebar of Blog for Iowa. This
page will show you the results of the elections for the candidates that
DFIA endorsed. Or, you can click here to view the results.
We would like to congratulate Ms. Molly Regan, Mr. Jeff Danielson, Mr. Frank Wood, Rep. Ed Fallon, and Rep. Cindy Winckler.
"We are the ones we have been waiting for."

Ohio: Count The Votes!

It's not over in Ohio. As this email notes:
Bush is currently leading in Ohio by 136,221.
If there are 250,000 provisional ballots outstanding - the highest number I've seen...
And 90% of those ballots are good, as they were in 2000... That leaves 225,000 votes.
If 85%
of those ballots prove to be for Kerry, about the number that Gore got
in 2000. That leaves us with 191,250, giving us a lead of 55,029.
If there are only 200,000 provisionals, following the same calculation would leave us with a lead of 16,779.
If the
provisional ballots are only 175,000 that leaves us with a deficit of
-2,346 - that will leave us in a position to get an automatic
statewide recount.
Or, to put it another way, an automatic recount is triggered by a margin of 0.25% or between 13,000 and 16,000 votes.
Now
Republicans will likely whine about lawyers and litigating the election
and stuff like that. Just note that Republicans are just as quick to
resort to the courts when they feel the integrity of the electoral
process is in danger.
Democrat
Brian Higgins is the expected winner in NY-27 with 51% of the vote
(132,999 Higgins, 129,159 Naples); however a late night legal manuever
by the Republicans will delay the victory as Republicans presented a
restraining order to stop the counting of ballots in the race.
Making
sure the will of the people is represented, that every vote is counted,
is paramount. If it takes lawyers and judges to arrive at a conclusive
answer, then so be it.
* * * * *
And Trish Nelson of Rapid Response - Iowa
reports that she just heard on AirAmerica Radio that the Bushies are
sending ground troops by car, by bus, by plane, etc., to claim their
"victory" in Ohio. Stay tuned.

Iowa Senate Appears Headed for 25-25 Split

Iowa Senate Appears Headed for 25-25 Split
by Jonathan Roos and Lynn Campbell, Des Moines Register
Tuesday's
unpredictable battle for control of the Iowa Senate may have ended in a
history-making tie, leaving neither party with a majority to pass bills.
"It
appears we're left with a 25-25 tie," said Senate Minority Leader
Michael Gronstal, a Council Bluffs Democrat who would be in the
position of sharing power with the current Senate majority leader -
Republican Stewart Iverson of Dows.
...Republicans
went into the election with a 29-21 advantage. Twenty-six votes are
needed to approve laws. If one side can only muster 25 votes, it will
need help from the other party in passing a bill. Republicans actually
would have only 24 senators on hand, since Chuck Larson, a Cedar Rapids
Republican, is on Army Reserve duty in Iraq.
...Sievers was defeated by Democratic challenger Frank Wood of Eldridge in Senate District 42.
Democrats
grabbed an open seat from Republicans in Black Hawk County. Jeff
Danielson, a firefighter, defeated Frank Dowie, an insurance executive.
