Hiroshima, the pictures they didn't want us to see

By Frank Cordaro

The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed about 250.000 people and became the most dreadful slaughter of civilians in modern history. However, for many years there was a curious gap in the photographic records.

Folks;

Below is a reminder and invite to join us at Offutt AFB for out annual Aug 6-9 vigil. Avove is a link and attached are some readings that can help you start thinking about why we vigil every Aug 6-9.

Invite to Annual Aug 6 to 9 Vigil at the gates of Offutt AFB

The DM and Omaha CW Communities invite you to join us for our annual 3 1/2 day "shake and bake" vigil at the gates of Offutt Air Force Base, in Bellevue, NE. home of the Strategic Nuclear (StratCom) and the US Military Space Commands.

Come stand, pray and do penance with us. Or come and sit, bring a blanket, or foldeable chair, water jugs, ice chest, umbrellas for the sun and rain and food to share. Just come for an hour or two and share your hope for peace as we commemorate the Anniversary of the USA atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan on Aug 6 and 9, 1945. Contemplate with us the work and mission of these god-awful Offutt Commands, the challenges they pose to all life on our planet and the demonic claim it holds on the soul and spirit of our nation.

This year's vigil begins Monday Aug 6th at 8 a.m. the hour the USA dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, at the Kinney gate and main entrance of Offutt AFB. The vigil ends Thursday Aug 9th at 11 a.m., the hour the USA dropped the second atomic bomb on Nagasaki.

The vigil will begin at 8 a.m. each day and last until 8 p.m. (12 hours) to Thursday Aug 9th. On Aug 9th the vigil concludes with a prayer circle and possible line crossing at 11 a.m.

Over night hospitality is available at Holy Family Parish in Omaha (1715 Izard St) starting Sunday evening Aug 5th. The church only offers floor space. Bring your own bed roll and pillow. If you need a bed, you really need to contact us before hand to insure we find one for you.

Everyone is welcome, especially those in the Omaha area! Come for an hour or for the whole three days.

Peace Building:

Cost of War Banner

John Tuzcu will be heading up AFSC's Cost of War project this summer by taking our display to county fairs, town squares, markets, public events and wherever else we can get it around the state of Iowa. The visibility of this project deeply depends upon our allies and partners across the state.

The display includes five poles with two 10-foot-long banners on each that exhibit the cost of a single day of the Iraq War and how the money used for guns and bombs could cover some of our basic necessities here at home if we were to choose life and pull out of Iraq TODAY:

ONE DAY OF THE IRAQ WAR = $720 Million

= 163,525 People with Healthcare
= 84 New Elementary Schools
= 6,482 Families with Homes
= 1,153,846 Children with Free School Lunch
= 12,478 Elementary School Teachers
= 423,529 Children with Healthcare
= 34,904 Four-year Scholarships for Students
= 1,274,336 Homes with Renewable Electricity
= 95,364 Head Start Places for Children

We're looking for allies around the state to help us identify locations and events where we might present this display. If your group is interested in organizing a peace event in your town and would be interested in using the banners, please contact me to make arrangments. Send thoughts, suggestions and plans on how to get this exhibit into your town so all Iowans will realize that not only does the war rage on in Iraq but that another war is ravaging us here at home.

The Word in Washingon: Chemical Security

By Meshawn Ayala

I just got an email from Alex, our toxics advocate in DC, and it seems that progress is being made on the comprehensive chemical security bill we've all been pushing for. According to Alex we need your help; here's what he wrote:

On Tuesday July 24th, the House Homeland Security Committee will hold a hearing on chemical plant security. This hearing is a step in the right direction and we understand that a chemical security bill may soon be introduced.  In fact the bill has already been written but unfortunately is held up in process.

Can you get in touch with all your members today and ask them to help so that we can tip the balance and ensure this bill gets introduced before August.

   Thanks, Alex

Join Alex and I and urge Representative Thompson to make our communities safer. If you have already taken this action please get your friends and family to help out by forwarding them this email.

Volunteer Call from Iowa Group for Peace

By Vern Naffier, PCCI

Friends for peace and justice:

It is anticipated that some time near the end of this summer, the 4000th U.S. soldier will be killed in Iraq and that the number of Iowans killed in action will reach 50.  In memory of the fallen in battle and to impress on our legislators and the public that we MUST begin withdrawal of our troops from the senseless quagmire in Iraq, a special 4000 Deaths Rally is being planned in Des Moines.

A procession from Nollen Plaza to our Iowa legislators' offices and on to the State Capitol, where a candle light ceremony will be held, will take place soon after the announcement of the 4000th death.

A very impressive and elaborate visual is being prepared to be carried by the marchers.

For this we need 300 volunteers to carry the light weight visuals in the procession (We will let you know what the surprise visual is later. It will be respectful but will carry enormous impact).

Please let me know if you will volunteer as one of the 300.  Please also ask others to contact me to volunteer.  Volunteers should be ready on fairly short notice to walk in the procession.  In addition to the 300 we hope for hundreds more to walk in the procession.

The Rally is being initiated by PCCI and planned by representatives of a number of different peace groups in Des Moines.

Vern Naffier, Board President, Progressive Coalition of Central Iowa, Inc.
Important P.S.  We need several volunteers to help with the construction of the visuals. Construction will take place on the property of Tony and Vonnie Salem in Des Moines. First work party will be held Sunday afternoon, July 29.  Please let me know if you can help. (515 964-1353 or email)

Report of July 6th Occupations of Senators' Grassley and Harkin's Cedar Rapids Offices

From the Iowa Occupation Project

------------------------------

July 6, 2007

Twenty Iowans were arrested today for occupying or attempting to occupy Senators Grassley's and Harkin's Linn County offices in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.  Raging in ages from 20 to 72, participants were from seven cities in Iowa. The action was part of the Iowa Occupation Project, connected with the National Occupation Project http://vcnv.org/project/the-occupation-project  out of Chicago IL. Friday's occupations were a response to the senators' affirmative votes on the Iraq war supplemental spending bill that was recently passed by Congress.

The occupation followed the morning sentencing of the CR11, eleven people who were arrested February 26 inside Grassley's Cedar Rapids office following a similar action. The CR11 were all given $65 fines plus court costs.

After the sentencing, 75 people attended a 1 p.m. rally held in a park near the Federal Building in Cedar Rapids. At the Rally organizers explained that both senators had been mailed and hand-delivered letters asking them to "pledge to vote against any further funding requested for the continuing war and occupation in Iraq."  The senators were informed that if the pledge was not signed by July 4, 2007, that occupation would occur.

The rally was co-sponsored by several Iowa peace groups including The Iowa Occupation Project, Women for Peace Iowa, the Linn County Green Party, Iowans For Peace, Des Moines based Catholic Peace Ministry, Des Moines Catholic Worker, Iowa Peace Network, School For Moral Courage in Iowa City, University of Iowa Anti-war Committee and the UNI Campus Antiwar Network.

After the rally ended, around 1:30 p.m,. the whole group went directly to Senator Grassley's Office in the Federal Building. Upon arriving at the door of the Federal Building where Senator's Grassley's is located, activists were informed only one member of the group would be permitted to enter the building at one time.  Iowa City, activist, Mona Shaw, 56, of Iowa City had arrived at the building shortly before the group and had already been admitted to building.  The remainder of the group was informed that none could enter until Shaw returned. An hour-long stand off proceeded in which activists insisted that all who wanted to get into Grassley's office should be allowed. A spontaneous rally took place at the entrance of the Federal building. Shaw remained in Grassley's office determined to stay until others were allowed to join her.

David Goodner of Iowa City was arrested after attempting to enter the Federal building on a side entrance. Friends later bailed Goodner out of jail. He is facing charges of criminal trespass and interference with official acts.

An hour into the stand off the Federal Marshalls relented and allowed the rest of the group to enter the building.

The group intending to visit Senator Harkin's office broke off from the activist assembled at the Federal building and went directly to Harkin's Office in the Wells Fargo building, two blocks from the Federal building. All were allowed access to Harkin's Office.

At 5:00 p.m. when the buildings were closing, both groups were asked to vacate both premises or risk arrest.  Soon after 5:00 p.m. those willing to risk arrest were arrested by the Cedar Rapids police, issued citations that included a July 20th court appearance date to answer to charges of criminal trespass, and then released.

Below is a list of those who were arrested and the offices they occupied:

In Senator Grassley's Office

Mona Shaw, Iowa City, 56 yrs
Lou Hellwig, Cedar Falls, 72 yrs
Ajax Robert Ehl, Iowa City, 37 yrs
Kathy Hall, Cedar Rapids, 63 yrs
Megan Felt, Iowa City, 20 yrs
Lee Mickey, North Liberty, 71 yrs
Nyssa Koons, Iowa City, 20 yrs
Brian Shearer, Iowa City, 22 yrs
Gloria Williams, Iowa City, 57 yrs
Brian Terrell, Maloy IA, 50 yrs
Renee Espeland, Des Moines, 46 yrs

In Senator Harkin's Office

Michael Rack, Iowa City, 35 yrs
Lara Elborno, Iowa City, 20 yrs
Kerry Hofferber, Cedar Falls, 21 yrs
Chris Gaunt, Grinnell, 50 yrs
Rose Persaud, Iowa City, 47 yrs
Jamie Fredericksen, Iowa City, 37 yrs
Daisy Espino, Iowa City, 26 yrs
John Paul Hornbeck, Iowa City, 25 yrs
All those arrested were processed at the scene and released.

David Goodner, 26 of Iowa City was arrested outside the Federal Building while attempting to enter through another, rather than the main entrance to the building.  He was taken to the Linn County jail and later released on bail.

Pastors for Peace - Cuba Caravan in DM July 7

By
Fran Fuller & Renee Espeland

Iowa Peace Network <iowapeacenetwork@gmail.com>  is hosting the IFCO/Pastors for Peace 18th US-Cuba Friendshipment on July 7, 2007, at noon at the Friends Meeting House, 4211 Grand Avenue, Des Moines, IA.

This event is a fundraiser for the Caravan. They will be giving a presentation at noon followed by a freewill offering and a potluck lunch.  Please bring a dish to share.

www.pastorsforpeace.org

(See Pastors for Peace Caravan to Cuba 2006 on YouTube.)

"In July 2007 the 18th Friendshipment will travel on 14 different routes to visit more than 120 US and Canadian cities. They will travel in school buses, trucks, and cars to Cuba via Mexico with medical and educational supplies collected from groups across the US and Canada as a collective challenge to the blockade and travel ban.

The US government says you can't go to Cuba and see things for yourself. We say you should! Our Friendshipment Caravans to Cuba call domestic and international attention to the cruel and immoral US economic blockade by delivering humanitarian aid to our sisters and brothers in Cuba without asking permission for a US Treasury Department license.

In November 2006, the United Nations once again voted overwhelmingly (183-4) to condemn the US blockade. We know that many members of Congress are deeply unhappy with the policy. Meanwhile the Bush administration and its "Commission for Assistance to a Free Cuba" continue desperately to look for more ways to starve the Cuban people into surrendering to US domination.

We think that the tide is turning in the US against the blockade, but this issue cannot be left to the politicians - we must take the lead and challenge them by implementing a People to People Foreign Policy that calls for an end to this insidious and immoral policy."
