Jay Mattsson _____ Here's a piece Kirsi Marcus wrote about the show: It's a Family Affair: KRUU Fundraiser Features Wells Sisters By Kirsi Marcus Lots of big things are starting to happen in our small town. For instance, on Saturday, May 10, at 8:00 p.m., the Stephen Sondheim Theatre welcomes onto its stage some of the most talented musicians (and a dancer) connected with the Fairfield community. The event will be the first annual Classical Gala Benefit Concert, with all proceeds going to support the local KRUU radio station, founded by Roland Wells in September 2005. The Gala certainly proves to be a family affairtwo of the performers are Roland's sisters, Eleanor and Catherine, and his brother-in-law Dr. Charles Lee. This remarkable family, native to Australia but raised in Fairfield, represents some of the best talent this town has generated. KRUU Radio has been running for just under two years now, completely on the basis of community donations and volunteers. In the short time since it transmitted its first radio waves, KRUU has become an important point of pride for Fairfield, which is home to some of the most interesting and diverse people that any small town can boast. KRUU has provided an excellent forum for talented people to share their thoughts and experiences, a passion for music, or expose our community to something a little different. In short, it has fulfilled its mission of providing a "voice" for the people of Fairfield. "The amount of time that our hosts put into their shows just astounds me!" Roland says, with a smile on his face. "Our volunteers are so passionate about the station." And for some, like Ari Berman, a Fairfield native who is now a journalist for The Nation in New York and host of the show Politicking with Ari Berman, KRUU has provided a great way for him to play an active part in the community in which he grew up. Operating on a modest annual budget of $77,000, KRUU relies on fundraisers like the Classical Gala Concert to keep its doors open and its radio waves broadcasting. The station is hoping to bring in at least $6,000 from the event, with tickets priced at $20 (students $15, children under 10 free). "Fairfield has such an amazing gathering of creative talents," says Catherine Wells, a dancer with Ballet Nouveau Colorado. "I always feel so supported by the community." She is thrilled to be dancing at the benefit, and even more excited about doing her part to support the station. No stranger to community projects, Roland founded a youth center (the Beatbox) in Fairfield at the young age of 19. During its five-year reign, he devoted countless hours to educating local teens, providing a safe haven from drugs and alcohol. It was during the Beatbox era that the station took its first steps, applying for its low power, non-commercial license. And the success of the station shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's ever had a conversation with Roland; it's evident within seconds that he is a true leader. "Honestly, I think the world of Roland," says his sister Eleanor, "and I am constantly amazed by what he does for the community." Eleanor, a cellist with the Boulder Philanthropic (among numerous other orchestras), will perform Mozart's "Two Cello Sonata" with her husband Charles and George Crumb's "Solo sonata for violincello" with her sister, Catherine. The night promises to be a beautiful event and a rare treat for Fairfielders. Finally, let's clear up a question about the radio station that has been under hot debate for some time. Is KRUU pronounced "crew"? Or "k-ru"? Roland laughs at the query, replying diplomatically, "It's whichever you choose! Since the radio station belongs to the community, however people want to say it is fine by me." -- James Moore Station Manager KRUU-LP 100.1 FM The Voice of Fairfield, Iowa www.kruufm.com <http://www.kruufm.com> We put the unity in community Thursday, February 14

Rove Protests Planned
By the UI Anti-war Committee So, while Bruce Braley ignores Rove, Rummy and the War, and focuses on steroids and Roger Clemens, responsible local citizens are taking action! The University of Iowa Lecture Committee may be paying Karl Rove $40,000 to speak on campus, but Rove's presence in Iowa City won't be met without opposition. The University of Iowa Anti-war Committee has formed a coalition with other student and community groups to protest Rove's paid presence in our town. We are not opposed to Karl Rove because of his conservative viewpoint. We are opposed to him because his role in crafting Iraq war policy, exposing CIA operative Valerie Plame, and the politically-motivated firings of U.S. Attorney Generals makes him a traitor and a war criminal. If we lived in a functioning democracy, the only place Rove would be expressing his 1st Amendment rights would be inside a courtroom and then a prison cell. Despite our opposition to Rove's presence on campus, and our disagreement with the UI Lecture Committee's decision to give a traitorous war criminal a $40,000 speaking fee, the UI Antiwar Committee and allies will not prevent Rove from speaking. Instead, we are calling for a street protest outside the IMU beginning at 5:30pm on Sunday February 17. We have also negotiated with the UI Lecture Committee and the Office of the Vice-President for a space inside the IMU where those opposed to Rove's presence can congregate and network. We will be holding a press conference inside the IMU prior to Rove's interview with Professor Frank Durham. If Rove is protected by the 1st Amendment, then the rights of large segments of the Iowa City community opposed to his presence must also be protected. We know when Rove is coming into town, where he will be, and who he will be with. However, there are no plans to dog him at this time. The UI Anti-war Committee sees this as an opportunity to further educate the community about Rove's direct involvement in crafting Iraq war policy, an action that makes him an accomplice to war crimes and crimes against humanity. We are calling on federal authorities to arrest Rove in Iowa City for treason, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. If federal authorities are not available at this time, we are calling on the Iowa City Police Department and the University of Iowa Police to hold Rove in custody until such time that U.S. Federal Marshals may be dispatched to pick the traitorous war criminal up. The UI Anti-war Committee is a student group with an active membership of 45-50 people. The Des Moines Catholic Worker, Des Moines IndyMedia, Crimethinc, Wild Rose Rebellion, Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, Johnson County Green Party, and a plethora of unaffiliated local citizens of conscience have all endorsed UIAC's call for a street demonstration. Supporting evidence and documentation: Fact: In July 2002, a high-level classified British/UK government document, the Downing Street Memo, was written which reads in part: "Bush wanted to remove Saddam, through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD. But the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy." Fact: In August 2002, one month after the Downing Street Memo was written, the White House Iraq Group was formed "to sell Iraq War to Congress, Public, and Allies." The WHIG met once a week at the White House throughout 2002 and 2003, and Karl Rove chaired every meeting. Public rhetoric against Iraq was escalated by the WHIG, who came up with propaganda terms like "smoking gun" and "mushroom cloud". Fact: Bush Administration officials made at least 935 demonstrably false statements to the American people about the threat posed by Iraq prior to the invasion, according to the Center for Public Integrity. Fact: Karl Rove and Scooter Libby exposed Valerie Plame, a CIA operative, because her husband blew the whistle on the Bush Administration's demonstrably false claims. Fact: Rove has also been implicated in the illegal firings of several U.S. Attorney Generals. The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee recently voted to hold Rove in "contempt" for refusing to testify and hand over documents related to the case. According to CNN: "Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday in favor of handing out contempt citations to a former and current White House official for failing to comply with subpoenas issued in the investigation into the firings of eight U.S. attorneys last year. The committee voted 11-7 to cite White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten for refusing to hand over documents related to the firings and to cite former White House adviser Karl Rove for refusing to testify and hand over internal documents." We Must TAKE Our Country Back! By Caroline Vernon Whether it’s health care,
the cost of education, our environment or global trade, Corporate America is holding
us all hostage to the almighty dollar. Greed continues to trump need as corporations
make record profits while more and more Americans fall into poverty every year.
Congress allows industry to write policy, and legislators don’t even read the
bills they enact. The average person would lose their job for gross negligence.
The pharmaceutical/insurance lobbies make billions on the grief of others, systematically
denying people essential treatment or drugs in order to save a buck. Half of
our taxpayer money goes to the Pentagon who “loses” over a trillion dollars and
“it’s nothing but a thing” yet we
have to beg to fund health care for our children. Agri-Business dominates at the
expense of our environment and health as 85% of our food is now genetically
modified, our meat is ridden with hormones and antibiotics, and pesticides have
permeated the water table. Global trade agreements allow corporations to
exploit for profit with no safeguards in place for workers or the environment. It is our moral imperative
to stand up and say no more! John Edwards seems to be the only candidate that
understands that we have to make an aggressive push to take our country back –
the key word being “take”. While it is important to be able to bring everyone
to the table, we can’t continue to allow Corporate America to eat all the food.
Which comes down to,
follow the money… Edwards and Obama are my
two top picks but there are some important distinctions to be made here. I think
Obama is awesome and I will support him whole
heartedly if he gets the Democratic nod, but as an activist, and more
importantly as a mother and your sister, there is way too much at stake in this election, not
only for our country but for the planet. Corporate The current energy bill before Congress may have 10 billion dollars allocated
toward renewable energy, and that rocks, but if you look at the whole pie, it’s
too little too late! 25 billion is allocated for guaranteed loans to build new
nuclear sites and billions more for coal fired plants. I mean, this is what I
am talking about people… Corporate Corporate America has had the resources and the necessary information to create new technologies for decades. Rather than doing the right thing, and truly be leaders of innovation, much of their resources have been spent preventing said technologies from entering the marketplace because, God forbid, that could hurt their bottom line. If their shareholders weren't so blinded by their own greed, they would be able to recognize the incredible opportunity that is presenting itself NOW. Corporate America and our elected officials could simply CHOOSE to lead this necessary technological revolution, but it remains to be seen.... so it's up to us. We must TAKE our
country back! Thursday, November 1

Controversial Rabbi Michael Lerner to Speak at Spiritual Progressives Conference Nov. 3rd in the Quad Cities By James Lee As the Election Season closes in on the Quad Cities, people are looking at the vast challenges facing our country and questioning how individual citizens can make a difference. According to national polling, over 70% of Americans feel that our nation is on the "wrong track". Organizers of the Spiritual Progressives Conference feel the answers to many of our concerns and worries are rooted in our values, faith and spirituality. Quad Cities Progressive Action for the Common Good (PACG) in conjunction with Churches United of the Quad Cities, Democracy for America–Quad Cities, Davenport Unitarian Church, Edwards Congregational-UCC, First Congregational-UCC, Network for Spiritual Progressives, and a host of other supporters are sponsoring a Spiritual Progressives Conference on November 3, 2007. The theme of the conference is: Living our Faith: Integrating Values and Politics in the Heartland. PURPOSE OF THE CONFERENCE It is our hope that the conference will help the public better understand how to more effectively integrate progressive values with political action that can create positive change in our nation. Conference organizers assert that progressives have been the social innovators who have initiated changes in our society that have given us more freedom, liberty, and equality. Progressives believe in continually improving our society in order to assist as many people as possible to achieve a better life for themselves, their families and the community as a whole. During this time of national drift when confusion seems widespread over what America represents and truly believes, progressive people must amplify their voices in the public conversation on what we value as a nation. We reject the tactic of using religion and spiritual traditions to be a divisive force in our nation; pitting one group of Americans against another group. We believe that ethics and morality cannot be claimed as the property of a single religion or political group, but must be understood in the context of furthering the well being of all humanity, present and future. The conference will cover three main areas:
1) Promoting a conversation on Progressive Values, Faith & and Spirituality The key-note speaker, Rabbi Michael Lerner, will examine the question of how our values are translated into political action. Rabbi Lerner is an internationally renowned social theorist, theologian, editor of Tikkun magazine, and author of The Left Hand of God: Taking Back Our Country from the Religious Right. He has a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley and is the founder of the Network for Spiritual Progressives. Faith, values, and spirituality play an important role in responding to the many challenges we face in our country today. The primary focus of this conference will be to explore how our values, faith, and spirituality can direct political action and transform our nation and our world. In so doing, this conference will be addressing the most serious issues facing our communities such as affordable, quality health care, the war, and global warming to name a few. Conference workshops include topics such as "Challenging the Misuse of God and Religion by the Religious Right", "Global Consciousness and Ecological Sanity", "Our Common Values" and "Grounding Justice Work in Spiritual Practice". To learn more about other workshops which will be presented at this conference,
click here. To download the flyer to print (double-sided to conserve paper) go to our home page: www.qcprogressiveaction.org. The Conference commences at 9:30am with a spiritual reflection on the state of our world. Rabbi Michael Lerner will speak at 10:15am. Workshops will continue throughout the day. At 2:30pm Rabbi Lerner will be part of a panel discussion with local leaders on the state of values and spirituality in our nation. Lunch will be served and the conference will come to a close at 3:30pm. This event is open to the public; seating is limited. To Register, contact PACG at 563-676-7580 or go to our website for more information: www.qcprogressiveaction.org. Interfaith Service The conference begins with an Interfaith Service led by Rabbi Lerner on Friday evening, November 2nd, 7pm at the Unitarian Church, 3707 Eastern Avenue, Davenport, Iowa. Spiritual Progressives Conference On Saturday morning, November 3rd, the Spiritual Progressive Conference will be held at the First Congregational Church-UCC, 2201 Seventh Avenue, Moline, IL 61265. Registration starts at 9:30AM. Book Signing with Rabbi Lerner Saturday evening, November 3rd, 5:30pm at Borders Bookstore, 4000 E 53rd St in Davenport. Monday, October 15

"...THE film about Hurricane Katrina" DESERT BAYOU opens 10/19 in Des Moines
By Cinema Libre Studio The Hurricane Katrina story that you haven’t heard…. On Friday 10/19, Alex LeMay's powerful new documentary, 'Desert Bayou,' opens in Des Moines, IA at the Varsity Theatre (1207 25th Street). Critics are praising this film as an indictment of the circumstances that led up to the displacement of between 645,000 to 1.1 million poor, black and elderly after Hurricane Katrina and as an expose of the racism that is still very much alive underneath the surface of America.
With the release of this is film, we hope to remind Americans that the struggle in New Orleans continues. Almost two years after President Bush promised to rebuild New Orleans on national television from Jackson Square, vast stretches of the poorer neighborhoods remain deserted, the poorest of the poor are living on the streets, only 45% of the schools have reopened, the homicide rate has shot up over the last year (15 times higher than New York City), and according to the latest data from FEMA, more than 73,000 families from the Gulf are still living in FEMA trailers. We are emailing you to ask if you will help us get the word out about this powerful and important film. We ask that you: • Send an email to your friends, colleagues or to an email list and ask them to go see DESERT BAYOU when it opens Friday 10/19 at Varsity Theatre www.desertbayoumovie.com STARTS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 19th in DES MOINES Varsity Theatre 1207 25th Street Des Moines, IA 50311 (515) 277-0404 Showtimes: Mon.-Fri. 7:45, 9:25 Sat.-Sun. 2:30, 7:45, 9:25 DESERT
