DES MOINES — Iowa House Speaker Christopher Rants hesitates to talk about the idea that he might run for governor in 2006 and insists he's focused on the upcoming legislative session.
But Rants, a Sioux City Republican, said he can't help but think that he'd do a better job than Democratic Gov. Tom Vilsack, who has said he will not seek re-election.
"Everybody that sits in the speaker's chair thinks about it, and I think about it, I think about it a lot," Rants said about a possible gubernatorial campaign.
He names two other potential candidates as front-runners in a Republican primary if they decide to run — Des Moines lawyer Doug Gross, the party's gubernatorial nominee in 2002, and U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle of Manchester.
Rants said the fund-raising capabilities of those two would make his own prospects more difficult.
