Sally Vitamvas pounds the pavement in House District 98 in her bid to unseat the incumbent
Oakland, Ia. - When Democrats asked 55-year-old Sally Vitamvas of Silver City to run for the Iowa Legislature, they had no idea she'd take it so literally.
For the past two weeks, the single mother of three grown children has been running on the side of southwest Iowa roads, going about four miles an hour. Her shirt and the car that follows her advertise "Vitamvas for Iowa House."
...The political newcomer, frustrated by a lack of name recognition after weeks of campaign door-knocking, came up with the idea of running while in a parade this summer. People laughed when she fell behind, had to run to catch up, and told people that she was literally running for office.
"I have to say, it's turned the campaign around," Vitamvas said Thursday, as she ran in the rain and waved at trucks and cars passing by. "Ever since I started this run, everywhere I go, people know who I am."
