Key Energy Efficient Building Code Vote to be in Minneapolis in September

With significant federal action on global warming apparently on hold until at least January 2009, a September vote of the International Code Council (ICC) in Minneapolis could provide a real boost nationwide in the effort to make new building construction more energy efficient.  At the September meeting, the ICC will vote on a package of measures that would make the International Energy Conservation Code 30% more energy efficient.  The Code is the benchmark used by many government agencies nationwide when reviewing plans for new structures.  Accordingly, the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which has endorsed the package, is urging its member cities to send the maximum number of ICC delegates it can to the meeting so the package passes.

New Report Calls Global Warming a National Security Threat

The consequences of excessive carbon dioxide pollution are usually discussed in terms of their impact on the environment and public health.  Now, a new report commissioned by CNA Insurance, and developed with the input of 11 retired admirals and generals, calls global warming a challenge to our national security as well.  One of the main reasons is global warming is considered a “threat multiplier” that further destabilizes regions that already are volatile.

Low-Cost European Airlines Becoming Source of Global Warming Pollution

Despite high fuel prices, a group of European airlines is offering trips within the continent for as little as $16 round trip, less than the cost of a train ticket.  The result?  A huge boom in discount airline passenger levels, and a surge in global warming pollution.  Commercial aviation already is the fastest-growing source of carbon dioxide pollution, surging 5% every year, according to the European Environment Agency.

What You Can Do: Replace That Gas-Powered Lawn Mower!

With the abundance of rainfall this spring and early summer, Midwestern lawns are growing by leaps and bounds.  Unfortunately, if those lawns are being mowed by gas-powered lawnmowers, the carbon dioxide pollution is growing, too.  There are several alternatives to consider, ranging from a variety of manual mowers to a solar version that doesn’t even need a person to push it.

The Iowa Global Warming Campaign

By Mike Carberry

After a short hiatus, Iowa Global Warming is back to work and starting our 2008 campaign. After a successful 2007, in which most of the presidential candidates took increasingly strong positions on global warming, we are expanding our work to include state and local policies as well. Our goals are:

- To get people involved as effectively and easily as possible, even if you only have a minute to give.

- To create a 'buzz' for global warming solutions through public events, word of mouth and media attention.

- To provide opportunities to get together, meet new people and have fun.

- And most importantly to make sure that our elected officials make global warming solutions a priority!

In that spirit, you are invited to Iowa Global Warming’s official campaign kickoff on St. Patrick's Day - 'You don't have to be Irish to go Green'. Free admission to see 'Leonardo DiCaprio’s The 11th Hour'. For more info on the film go to the website: www.11thHourFilm.com

Details: ‘The 11th Hour’ global warming documentary produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio. Monday, March 17 from 6:30 – 9:00 pm @ Billy Joe’s Picture Show, 1701 25th St., West Des Moines. Free Admission, Free Appetizers, Free Popcorn and Beverages. Food and Drink Specials.

Iowa Global Warming is here to help; so if you have a question or want to get involved, please give us a call or send us an email. We will always try to get back to you as soon as possible. And of course, you can visit our website: www.iowaglobalwarming.org

Thank you for your support of our campaign. We're looking forward to a great year of making Global Warming Solutions a priority!
