Iowa PIRG : Support Safer Alternatives

By Meshawn Ayala

Imagine if a hazardous chemical plant in your community exploded into flames and sent clouds of chemical-laden smoke into the air. And during the fire, firefighters, paramedics, and police officers didn't know why the smoke billowing from the plant was yellow or what the risks were to you and your neighbors.

With more than 15,000 chemical facilities nationwide this threat is very real. The most effective way to make chemical plants safer and more secure is to replace dangerous chemicals with safer technologies.

Please take a moment to urge your Representative to support comprehensive chemical security legislation that promotes safer alternatives. Then forward this email to your friends and family and ask them to do the same.

Background

In April, the Department of Homeland Security finalized temporary regulations intended to protect Americans from more than 15,000 chemical plants storing dangerous quantities of acutely toxic chemicals like hydrochloric acid or chlorine gas.  A single accident or deliberate release of these toxics could kill or seriously injure thousands.

Unfortunately, these regulations are far too weak and were adopted at a stiff price - they headed off stronger, comprehensive chemical security legislation aimed at protecting communities in the danger zones around these plants.

For more than five years, the chemical industry and its allies have derailed chemical security bills, winning weak regulations after backroom negotiations that preserve a dangerous status quo.

Above all, the new regulations ignore the most effective way to make chemical plants safer and more secure, which is to replace toxic chemicals with safer alternatives where feasible.  Fortunately, Congress already has a blueprint to establish a more protective program.

Please take a moment to urge your Representative to support comprehensive chemical security legislation that promotes safer alternatives. Then forward this email to your friends and family and ask them to do the same.

Establishing our Progressive Iowa Network (PIN) – Mark the Date!

By Caroline Vernon

On Saturday, June 9th, progressive leaders, activists and legislators from across the state will converge on Iowa City for our first 2007 Democracy for Iowa Organizing Summit.  We are still working out the details on the venue (forthcoming) but we will be meeting from 9am to 3pm (the last hour will be reserved for DFA-IA members to discuss administrative business so it will not be necessary for everyone to stay for that segment).

The purpose of this gathering is to establish the Progressive Iowa Network (PIN). This network will serve to better unite progressive organizations, legislators, and leaders across the state so we can support each other’s efforts around progressive issues in Iowa.

Currently, we have an unprecedented opportunity to get progressive legislation passed in our state. However, in order to achieve legislative victories on the issues that we care about, we must establish an effective framework that allows us to better organize our efforts, clarify our message, mobilize our base, educate the public and influence our state officials.

We have identified the following 5 issues as requiring urgent action:

1. VOICE (Voter-Owned Iowa Clean Elections)
2. CAFO regulations / Farm Bill
3. Fair Share
4. Healthcare
5. Media

Please note: we want ALL progressive organizations to attend this meeting and become part of this network even if we may not be focusing on your specific issues at this time.

The Summit Agenda will cover the following:

I. Why is PIN important?

The first part of this summit will discuss why PIN is important. Groups/Individuals will be asked to introduce themselves and identify their main areas and issues of focus:

• Policy/Research
• Lobbying
• Media/Public Relations (including bloggers)
• Grassroots Organizing

This will NOT be an informational meeting about the issues, but rather a strategy session on how we can support each other moving forward.

II. Update & Evaluation of the recent Iowa Legislative Session

• What went well?
• What would we do differently?

III. Break-Out Sessions by Issue

• Strategize with other progressives around the state that are working on the same issue.
• What kind of help do you need from other organizations/leaders who may not be directly involved in your issue.

Lunch

IV. Report back to larger group identifying specific needs

• What do you need from PIN?

We will not have time to hear specific plans but rather will want to hear your list of needs on how other organizations/leaders can help you make progress around your issue.

V. Where does PIN go from here?

We will discuss logistics, network structure and set a date and time for our next meeting(s).

VI. DFA-Iowa Administrative Planning Session (for DFA-IA members)

This last segment will be for DFA-IA members to discuss by-laws, how we can better support Blog for Iowa, and other administrative details.

Outreach around this summit has been underway for awhile -- many progressive organizations/individuals in Iowa have already been notified. However, if you have not yet heard from us directly, please email Caroline Vernon ASAP: carolina1961@gmail.comWe need every progressive organization, leader and legislator in Iowa to participate in order to achieve maximum effectiveness as a network.

Ask Congress to protect us from dangerous drugs

Our nation's drugs safety program is broken.  In recent years the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been too cozy with the powerful prescription drug industry and approved dangerous and deadly medicines such as Vioxx, Paxil and Ketek.  Vioxx is linked to heart disease, Paxil to suicide in children and Ketek to liver failure.

The good news is the Senate is considering drug safety legislation this week that will protect consumers from dangerous drugs like Vioxx and inform doctors of drug safety concerns.

Tell the bill's sponsors, Senators Ted Kennedy (D-Mass) and Mike Enzi (R-Wyo), that you support the bipartisan "Food and Drug Administration Revitalization Act" (S. 1082), and that they should oppose any amendments that will weaken the bill.

Then, ask your friends and family to help too by forwarding this e-mail to them.

Background

When Merck, the makers of Vioxx, first learned that their drug could cause serious health problems including heart attack and stroke, they could have told doctors and their patients. They didn't.

When GlaxoSmithKline, makers of the antidepressant Paxil, learned that it was linked to an increased risk of suicidal behavior in children, they could have sounded the alarm. They didn't.

These companies had the opportunity to do the right thing by giving doctors and patients the information they needed to make safe and informed medical decisions. They consciously chose not to tell the public the whole truth.

The problem is clear and there is bi-partisan agreement in Washington that something needs to be done. The pharmaceutical industry can't, and has proven that it won't, police itself. Lawmakers must reform the Food and Drug Administration so that it focuses on its original mission of ensuring that our medicines are safe.

The good news is that bi-partisan legislation, the "Food and Drug Administration Revitalization Act" (S. 1082) will reduce the number of consumers who die or suffer from adverse side effects cause by unsafe prescription drugs.
