Republican Betrayal
A look at the gas pump and the quagmire in Iraq conveys what most Americans now believe: betrayal by the Republicans. And the Energy Bill recently signed by Bush is one more example of that betrayal.
While prices at the pump continue to rise and while most Americans are being squeezed, close inspection of the Energy Bill demonstrates the disconnect of Republicans with the people. Rather than craft an Energy Bill that places an emphasis on energy independence, a bill was delivered and signed that gives tax breaks along with millions of taxpayer dollars to the Oil Companies. Now the people are paying those companies through the pump and through our tax dollars.
Adding insult to injury is Congressman Latham (R) of Iowa. During Latham's recent stop in Charles City, the congressman was asked about his support for the energy bill; in particular, the lack of attention and emphasis on renewable fuels. Congressman Latham's response was astounding as he replied, "Ethanol is harmful to the ozone."
As a representative of an agriculturally-based economy, as well as the largest ethanol producing state in America, Latham's remarks and attempt to disseminate misinformation regarding ethanol and its effect on the ozone are outrageous. Not only are his remarks outrageous but an insult to the constituents he has been sent to Washington to represent. A double betrayal.
As Latham's voting record demonstrates that he is a representative of Tom Delay and his district of Texas, isn't it time that those of us that live in the 4th Congressional District of Iowa begin to think about having a representative that considers the needs of Iowans instead of those of Tom Delay's Texas?
