GOP Fesses Up To Anti-Gay Mailing

GOP Fesses Up To Anti-Gay Mailing
by Doreen Brandt, 365Gay.com
(Washington)
- The Republican National Committee has finally admitted that it was
responsible for a mass mailing that claimed Democrats would permit gay
marriage and ban the Bible.
...The
literature shows a Bible with the word "BANNED" across it and a photo
of a man, on his knees, placing a ring on the hand of another man with
the word "ALLOWED." The mailing tells West Virginians to "vote
Republican to protect our families" and defeat the "liberal agenda."
The
mailing was aimed at evangelical Protestants, many of whom did not vote
in 2000. The RNC hopes it can attract the group to the polls this
November.
"At
least now the Republican party admits they are running a disgusting
campaign of bigotry for George W. Bush," Eric Stern, Director of GLBT
Outreach, DNC, told 365Gay.com. "Instead
of running on his failed record, Bush has launched a campaign of
distortion in an effort to divide the country at the expense of gay and
lesbian Americans."

Supporting Marriage Equality in Iowa

Dear Fellow Iowans:
As you
know, same sex couples and families face unique challenges and
experience barriers that our heterosexual neighbors often do not.
Coming out as a same sex couple or family is part of what will make
progress towards equality for our families in Iowa.
Along
with the support of Lambda Legal, many Iowans are coming together to
share their stories and help educate all Iowans about the challenges we
face. We are currently seeking same sex couples (and everyone
else) from all over Iowa to be a part of this educational
campaign.
If you
are part of a same sex couple, and have an interest in pursuing
marriage equality, we would love to talk to you. Additionally,
everyone else could help out by getting this information into the hands
of every same sex couple they know in Iowa. The opportunities to
educate and work for marriage equality will become very important in
Iowa, as well as the rest of the country.
Same sex
couples with an interest in marriage equality, feel free to give us a
call or email so we can fill you in on some of the things going on and
gather information about how you might be a part of it.
If you are unable to reach us, feel free to call or email RoiAnn Phillips or Roberto Tijerina at Lambda Legal (312-663-4413). They are wonderful people and have been very helpful in our efforts here in Iowa.
Thank
you for your consideration and interest in marriage equality.
With all of our wonderful stories, it's hard to imagine that equality
isn't close at hand.

Margaret Cho as Emergency Revolutionary

Margaret Cho as Emergency Revolutionary
AlterNet.org
...Campaigning
against injustice and hypocrisy whenever possible, Cho also takes the
time to interact at length with a highly devoted audience composed of
gays, straights, whites, Asians and whatever else America's so-called
melting pot can contain. Because, as much as any talent working in
these tough times of Patriot Acts and cowed journalists, she
understands that although true revolution begins at home, it ends in
the public square.
"To me,
revolution is the entitlement to change, to empower oneself to change,"
Cho recently explained to me in an interview. "That's the most
difficult part of revolution – feeling that you deserve one. It is a
powerful statement to want one, and of course an even more powerful
thing to go about starting one."

Gay Dems Praise Log Cabin Bush Decision

Gay Dems Praise Log Cabin Bush Decision
by Doreen Brandt, 365Gay.com
(Washington)
Gay Democrats and LGBT civil rights groups are praising Log Cabin
Republicans for refusing to endorse George W. Bush's re-[s]election.
"It was
probably a very difficult decision for them to make as Republicans but
was a natural decision under the circumstances," National Stonewall
Democrats spokesperson John Marble told 365Gay.com.
Wednesday morning Log Cabin Republicans announced they would not support Bush's bid for a second term.
“Some
will accuse us of being disloyal," said LCR Executive Director Patrick
Guerriero. "However, it was actually the White House who was disloyal
to the 1,000,000 gay and lesbian Americans who supported him four years
ago."
Log
Cabin Republicans, the GOP's LGBT group, accused the White House of
making a strategic political decision to pursue a re-[s]election
strategy catered to the radical right.
"The
pResident's use of the bully pulpit, stump speeches and radio addresses
to support a Constitutional amendment has encouraged the passage of
discriminatory laws and state constitutional amendments across
America. Using gays and lesbians as wedge issues in an election
year is unacceptable to Log Cabin,” said Guerriero.
The
group said it would not endorse Democratic nominee John Kerry.
Nevertheless, the decision could have a major effect on the outcome of
the presidential election. Polls suggest that even though Bush is
ahead of Kerry (sic) the election could be closer than in 2000.
Exit
polls in the 2000 election showed that over 1,000,000 gays and lesbians
voted for Bush/Cheney, including nearly 50,000 in Florida.
Al Gore "lost" Florida (sic), and the Presidential election (sic), in 2000 by fewer than 1,000 votes.
"I don't
think any self-respecting gay individual can vote for George W. Bush
and I think that Republican leaders like Washington DC council member
David Catania have made it clear that Bush has given the LGBT community
no reason to re-[s]elect him this fall," Stonewall Democrats' Marble
told 365Gay.com.

Gay Activists in GOP Refuse to Endorse Junta

Gay Activists in GOP Refuse to Endorse Junta
New York Times
The board of Log Cabin Republicans, the largest group for gay men and
lesbians in "the party," voted overwhelming last night against
endorsing [junta-puppet and malaprop-prone] George W. Bush for re-[s]election because of his support for
a proposed constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.
The decision ends six months of soul-searching as the group, which
endorsed Mr. Bush in 2000 and Bob Dole in 1996, wrestled with its
divided loyalties.
Although the group was immediately critical when the [pseudo-]pResident
announced his support for the amendment in February, it pointedly
refrained from ruling out an endorsement. Its effort to balance loyalty
to the party with opposition to a major item on the Republican agenda
has made it a target of criticism from both supporters and opponents of
the proposed amendment.
As delegates at the Republican National Convention were preparing to
adopt a platform condemning gay parents, for example, a handful of gay
rights activists were protesting outside a Log Cabin party on Aug. 29
in Bryant Park in New York.
In a meeting last night in Washington, the group's board voted 22 to 2
to withhold its endorsement, a spokesman said, declining to name the
holdouts.
In a statement afterward, Patrick Guerriero, executive director of Log
Cabin Republicans, cited exit polls showing that more than one million
gay men and lesbians voted for Mr. Bush in 2000. That included 45,000
in the pivotal state of Florida, which Mr. Bush "carried" by roughly
500 votes.

CNN Refuses to Air Gay Republican Ad

CNN Refuses to Air Gay Republican Ad

Log Cabin Republicans will not endorse Bush re-[s]election bid during convention
ATLANTA,
GA - CNN has informed the Log Cabin Republicans that it will not air
their new television advertising campaign, which is a response to the
politics of fear and intolerance.
Unlike CNN, other broadcast outlets are airing the ad. CNN claims that images in the ad are "too controversial."
"We are
deeply disappointed that CNN has refused our voices the opportunity to
be heard. Last week we told the Republican Party that you cannot
sugarcoat the vicious and mean-spirited platform, today we want CNN to
know that you cannot sugarcoat the politics of fear and intolerance
that lead to hate," said Log Cabin Executive Director Patrick Guerriero.
The
30-second commercial is being broadcast during the Republican National
Convention in New York City and on other cable stations nationwide. The
ad begins with footage from President Ronald Reagan's 1992 speech at
the Republican National Convention in Houston. President Reagan said,
"Whatever else history may say about me when I'm gone, I hope it will
record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears." The
commercial offers a clear choice for the GOP: follow President Reagan's
lead by uniting Republicans on common beliefs or follow Jerry Falwell,
Pat Buchanan and Rick Santorum's lead by dividing the GOP with an
intolerant social agenda based on fear and exclusion. The ad closes
with images of Fred Phelps holding a sign that reads "God
Hates F---," at the funeral of hate crime victim Matthew Shepard.
The ad can be viewed at www.logcabin.org.
