Stop Pain at the Pump campaign
By True Majority

When we launched our Stop Pain at the Pump campaign, we promised that between now and Election Day politicians would offer gimmicks that poll well but do nothing to deal with our serious energy problems. Right on schedule, the latest cockeyed proposal is picking up steam in Washington, DC. On Tuesday, John McCain suddenly announced that he was now supporting off-shore drilling for oil and George Bush is following suit and demanding that Congress reverse the decades-old ban(1).

It's time to state the obvious: Off-shore drilling is not a serious idea to reform our energy policy. The Government's own Energy Information Administration points out that this oil won't be available for decades and the total quantity is an "insignificant" drop in the bucket on the world oil market.(2)

The only groups that benefit from these proposals are big oil companies like Exxon-Mobil which are already making record profits. That's why we've partnered with Oil Change International on an easy online tool that exposes politicians who take money from oil companies and vote against ordinary Americans.

WHY do politicians vote for energy plans which only help Big Oil? Follow the money and find out.

Already, over 34,000 of you have signed our call for a windfall profits tax and real energy independence based on breaking our reliance on foreign oil. Your stories of pain at the pump are pushing back against the millions the oil industry is spending on lobbyists to boost their bottom line.

In the weeks ahead, we will continue to respond rapidly to misleading gimmicks like this one. Your message will put Congress on notice that they must oppose harmful proposals like gas tax holidays, drilling in Alaska, and off-shore oil exploration. More importantly, you will help put a human face on the pain at the pump that Americans are feeling every day and promote a real energy policy that will invest in America's future.

Tell your Congressional delegation to fight for real energy independence

Thanks for taking action. Together, we can relegate off-shore drilling to the dustbin of history right next to the gas tax holiday and the dodo,
