Renewable Energy Workshop for Farmers Is June 27 in Cedar Falls
By The IFU Information on Owning Your Own Wind Turbine, Selling Carbon Credits, and On-Farm Energy Efficiency Farmers and rural residents are invited to learn about investing in renewable energy at a workshop Friday, June 27 at the Center for Energy and Environmental Education on the University of Northern Iowa campus in Cedar Falls. The three workshop topics are: owning your own commercial-scale wind turbine; on-farm energy efficiency; and earning money through trading carbon credits for conservation techniques you may already practice on your farm. Presenters will be Gregg Heide, a Pomeroy farmer who is putting up his own wind turbine; Ed Woolsey, turbine project co-owner and energy lobbyist for the Union of Concerned Scientists; Dale Harvey, senior ag account representative for Alliant Energy; and Guy Rusche, project development specialist with the National Farmers Union carbon credit program. The workshop will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., and end around 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided at noon, along with an optional tour of the "green" CEEE building. Registration fee is $20 in advance, $25 at the door. The event is sponsored by the Iowa Farmers Union Education Foundation and Iowa Renewable Energy Association, with funding from the Leighty Foundation. Iowa Farmers Union is a non-profit, grassroots advocacy group representing family farmers across the state. IFU also collaborates on legislative work and educational programming with Women, Food and Agriculture Network, NFO-Iowa, and the Iowa Renewable Energy Association. IFU is a chapter of National Farmers Union, a general farm organization representing a quarter of a million family farmers and ranchers nationwide. NFU serves its membership by providing educational opportunities, supporting farmer-owned cooperative development, and presenting the organization's policies to lawmakers at the local, state and national levels.
