Call to Donate to UICHR
By Tom Slockett, UICHR Executive Board Member, and Karen Kubby, UICHR Friend As the end of the year quickly approaches we would like to ask that you give serious consideration to making a tax-free contribution to The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR). We are fortunate to have this center in our own community. Sadly, we live in a time of the loss of millions of lives to war in Iraq and elsewhere, genocides such as the unspeakable brutality in Darfur, diseases such as HIV/AIDS in Africa and elsewhere, and poverty everywhere. These maladies infect the human condition, cry out to conscience within each and every one of us, and demand our attention, individually and collectively. Human rights, honoring the intrinsic value of every woman, man, and child, are the source of legitimacy for governance. Without human rights, we cannot even hope to live together in peace, or reach towards the possibilities for maximizing the potential for one and all. Without increased awareness and efforts in the struggle for human rights for both present and future generations, the very question of human survival is in question. The UICHR is a world class center under the superb leadership of Burns H. Weston, Bessie Dutton Murray Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus and UICHR Interim Director/Senior Scholar. After serving as founding director of the UICHR, Burns agreed to return as Interim Director following the death of Kenneth J. Cmiel who succeeded him, tragically cutting short his considerable accomplishments. In the last five years, state funding for The University of Iowa has been cut $205 million below what it would have received had funding been frozen at the level established six years prior. This occurred despite the Higher Education Price Index jumping 27.8 percent during the same period of time. Please consider making a tax deductible contribution to the UICHR at the following link. No amount is too small or too large. https://www.uifoundation.org/GiveToIowa/WebObjects/GiveToIowa.woa/wa/goTo?area=uichr Sincerely, Tom Slockett, UICHR Executive Board Member, and Karen Kubby, UICHR Friend |
