Anti-choice Extremists Headed to Iowa
A Message from Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa They're headed to Iowa. Anti-choice extremists are bringing a graphic campaign of intolerance and inflammatory, offensive rhetoric in the form of a truck and plane mobilization. The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform's truck/plane campaign includes semi-trailers painted with pictures of aborted fetuses and airplanes which tow flyby banners. This is an anti-choice extremist group targeting swing states for the November elections. The images featured on the sides of the trucks and banners are very graphic. The group historically targets highly-populated areas such as shopping malls, downtown areas, middle schools and high schools. This group is currently in South Dakota with plans to spend the next two weeks in Iowa. They have indicated intent to arrive in Des Moines on Monday, August 2, and spend five days in the Greater Des Moines area. We are also expecting the trucks in Sioux City, Cedar Falls, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the Quad Cities. Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa (PPGI) believes that this attempt by The Center for Bio-Ethical Reform is intentionally designed to shock rather than educate. Harassment and intimidation do not prevent abortion - access to comprehensive, medically-accurate, sex education and health services will. PPGI will continue our mission to protect the rights of women and prevent unwanted pregnancies through providing quality reproductive health care to women, men and families throughout the state. This invasion provides us with an important educational opportunity and you can help. What You Can Do Know the issue and talk to your friends about this invasion and the need for them to join you in speaking up to protect choice. Explain that: *This is an offensive attempt to intimidate and shame women who have had an abortion and those who support reproductive rights. *This is an out-of-state-group using offensive propaganda to thrust its narrow, ideological views on citizens. *Most Americans, regardless of their view on abortion rights, object to graphic scare tactics, aimed at scaring, humiliating and bullying the public. *Anti-choice extremists like these are not concerned about women or children. If they were, they would not frighten individuals, specifically children, with graphic, often inaccurate images. Instead, they would support access to family planning information that enables women to prevent unintended pregnancies. Recruit new Planned Parenthood Action Network members. As an activist, you know the importance of using your voice. Encourage your friends to join you by signing up to receive alerts here. Thank you for your energy, involvement and activism. Deep Divisions in GOP on Choice, Gay Rights
The GOP's Silent Majority AlterNet.org After a recent poll determined that most Republicans support a woman's right to choose, a pro-choice Republican bloc prepares for a turf war at the upcoming convention. Winding through the crowds in Washington, D.C., during April's pro-choice march, Jennifer Blei Stockman and dozens of fellow-travelers held up simple white signs on wooden sticks saying, "I'm a Pro-Choice Republican." "People applauded us. They were so happy to see a Republican group there," said Stockman, a Connecticut resident. But then she admits, "We were the oxymoron of the March." A pro-choice faction might seem, at first glance, fated for outcast status in a Republican Party that takes a hard line against abortion and women's right to choose. Undaunted, however, the group is now raising an even bolder banner and staking a greater claim on its rightful place in the GOP. Begun in 1999, when three regional groups with similar missions combined to form the Republican Pro-Choice Coalition, the group last month renamed itself Republican Majority for Choice, with the emphasis on "majority." (more) Deep GOP Divisions On Anti-Gay Amendment 365gay.com (Washington) As the US Senate prepares to vote . . . on a proposed amendment to ban same-sex marriage deep divisions are emerging within the Republican Party on the need for the measure. Today the Senate Judiciary Committee saw just how much some of the nation's most strident conservatives oppose amending the Constitution even though they are equally opposed to same-sex unions. Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, whose state is the only one to recognize gay marriages, told senators that unless the amendment is passed gay marriages will spread like a “wildfire” across the country, eroding traditional marriage and voiding more restrictive laws in other states. . . . But, former Rep. Bob Barr (R-Ga.) the author of the federal Defense of Marriage Act told the committee that the Constitution shouldn’t be used as a vehicle for banning gay marriage. “We meddle with the Constitution to our own peril,” Barr said. “If we begin to treat the Constitution as our personal sandbox, in which to build and destroy castles as we please, we risk diluting the grandeur of having a constitution in the first place.” (more) |
