Fallon Reschedules Health Care Tour for Thursday and Friday of This Week

(D-Des Moines) will visit 8 cities in central and eastern Iowa on
Thursday and Friday to introduce his plan for universal health care.
The tour was initially scheduled for last week but had to be postponed

“Other
politicians seem content to apply a few bandaids to our ailing health

overhaul of a system that fails more and more Iowans every year. Other
states are moving forward with reform initiatives and with the right
leadership, Iowa can, too.”

Iowa Democrats File Ethics Complaint Against Nussle
by

Iowa Democrats File Ethics Complaint Against Nussle
Iowa Democratic Party
Today, the Iowa Democratic Party filed a complaint with the Iowa Ethics Board against Republican gubernatorial candidate Jim Nussle.
After careful review of both his January state and federal campaign
filings, it appears that Congressman Nussle has made expenditures from
his federal account that clearly benefit his gubernatorial race, and he
has failed to report these expenditures as in-kind contributions.
The specific complaints (taken from the letter submitted by Mike Milligan, Executive Director of the Iowa Democratic Party, to the Ethics Board):
1) Mr.
Nussle’s state finance report fails to show any in-kind donations from
the federal “Nussle for Congress Committee,” while six individuals were
simultaneously paid out of both accounts. Since there is
no campaign for Congress, the staff and consulting paid by the federal
committee was supplementing the salary and consulting fees paid by the
gubernatorial campaign.
2) The development costs of Nussle’s gubernatorial campaign website may have been paid for by the congressional campaign account, with no record of an in- kind donation to the gubernatorial campaign account.
3) Three
congressional campaign expenditures, totaling $33,839.69 for
media-production, were made to McCarthy Marcus Hennings in 2005.
Particularly of interest is the $26,500.00 expenditure made on 4/4/05,
less than one and half months before the congressman officially
announced that he was running for governor. The official
announcement tour of his bid for Governor was accompanied by a video,
which can be found on his website. However, in the gubernatorial
campaign state report there is no report of video or media production
expenses to McCarthy Marcus Hennings until two months after his
announcement. It seems clear that the congressional campaign paid for
the initial video on 4/4/05, which was then used by the gubernatorial
campaign with no acknowledgement of the contribution in the state
report.
Nussle is not running for Congress and had not been running for re-election to Congress throughout 2005.

Fallon: State Legislature Overrun with Special Interests

Fallon: State Legislature Overrun with Special Interests
State Representative and gubernatorial candidate Ed Fallon
(D-Des Moines) said on Monday that special interest money in politics
is keeping the state legislature from making “obvious moves” on issues
most Iowans share opinions about, such as car title loans, cigarette
taxes and renewable energy.
“Take
the car title loan situation, for example,” Fallon said. “This is
predatory lending at its worst, targeting the poor and forcing them to
pay exorbitant interest rates. Predatory loans are exactly the kind of
abuse the legislature is supposed to prevent. But LoanMax affiliates gave Speaker of the House Christopher Rants and the Iowa Leadership Council $40,000, and now legislation to regulate those loans won’t be debated. That’s not a coincidence.”
Rants
and the Council also received $60,000 from tobacco companies. Rants is
refusing to allow debate on raising the cigarette tax.
“If you
need proof that big-money special interests buy influence in politics,
this is it,” Fallon said. “The decision to raise taxes on cigarettes
should be based on its impact on Iowa businesses and the potential
benefits for Iowans, not based on the profit margins of companies
outside the state. But when outside interests throw lots of money to
key officials in Iowa, their voice is heard to the exclusion of the
public’s interest.”
Fallon’s criticism was not just targeted at Rants, however.
“As
we’re developing policies for renewable energy, one of many issues we
need to discuss is who will control it: local farmers and entrepreneurs
or large energy companies,” Fallon said. “More
than one in three members of Iowa’s legislative leadership received
contributions from MidAmerican Energy in 2005. Several of them also
took money from Alliant Energy. It’s no coincidence that more and more
of Iowa’s renewable energy systems are being controlled by big
corporations.”
In 2005, a non-election year, MidAmerican gave $40,500 to Iowa legislators,
including Rants, Senate Co-President Mike Gronstal (D-Council Bluffs),
Senate Republican President Pro Tempore Larry McKibben
(R-Marshalltown), House Majority Leader Chuck Gipp (R-Decorah), House
Majority Whip Libby Jacobs (R-West Des Moines), House Assistant
Majority Leader Rod Roberts (R-Carroll), House Assistant Majority
Leader Carmine Boal (R-Ankeny), Senate Republican Floor Leader Stewart
Iverson (R-Clarion), Senate Republican Assistant Leader Mark Zieman
(R-Postville), Senate Republican Assistant Leader John Putney
(R-Gladbrook), Senate Republican Assistant Leader Jerry Behn (R-Boone),
House Minority Leader Pat Murphy (D-Dubuque), and House Assistant
Minority Leader Mike Reasoner (D-Creston).

Throw a House Party for Ed Fallon the First Week of April
The week of April 1-8
will be another great chance to show your support for Ed Fallon, as
Fallon for Governor plans to hold over 100 house parties in seven days.
These house parties will help generate some of the revenue necessary
for our media campaign in May and early June, but will also be a great
opportunity to meet fellow Fallon supporters, and get started on
organizing efforts for the spring.
You can share the work and increase the turnout by working together
with Fallon supporters in your community. For more information, or to
sign up to host a house party, email Lynn Heuss at lheussdm@yahoo.com.

Nussle Uses False Arguments to Defend Soaring Federal Deficits

Nussle Uses False Arguments to Defend Soaring Federal Deficits

Nussle Claims 9/11 is to Blame; Facts Show Tax Cuts, Increased Spending Are the Real Cause
DES MOINES – Jim Nussle once again tried to justify soaring budget deficits
to Dubuque voters this weekend by blaming the war on terror. However,
even conservative think tanks blame increased federal spending and tax
cuts for wealthy Americans for the largest budget deficits in America’s
history.
In a
Dubuque Telegraph Herald article from February 4th, Nussle claims, "The
huge deficit was caused more by Osama bin Laden than George W. Bush.”
However, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities reported in January,
2004, that the Bush tax cuts are three times more responsible for
deficits than war and defense funding. [Center on Budget and Policy
Priorities. 1/26/04] Even the conservative Heritage Foundation
has said, “’Defense and 9/11 are not responsible for most of the
spending increases.’” [Washington Post, 10/3/05]
Last
week, the U.S. House narrowly passed the FY06 budget reconciliation
bill that Nussle claimed would save taxpayers $40 billion over ten
years. However, the House will soon
take up a bill approving $60 billion in tax cuts that negate any
savings and adds $20 billion to the federal deficit. Nussle has voiced
support for these budget-busting tax cuts.
“Nussle’s
argument that the exploding budget deficits are caused by September
11th and the war in Iraq just don’t ring true,” said Iowa Democratic
Party Executive Director Mike Milligan. “When will Nussle finally tell
Iowa voters the truth: that out of control Republican spending policies
and extreme tax cuts for the richest Americans are to blame for federal
deficits?”
