FALLON: Patty Judge Fundraising "Legal, but not Ethical"

FALLON: Patty Judge Fundraising "Legal, but not Ethical"
Rep. Ed Fallon calls for Clean Elections law in Iowa and warns against the influence of corporate hog confinement operators
State Representative and gubernatorial candidate Ed Fallon
(D-Des Moines) held a press conference at the Capitol this afternoon
(Thursday) to discuss how Secretary of Agriculture Patty Judge's
campaign finance disclosure reports show the need for a Clean Elections
Law in Iowa.
"Patty's
report, quite frankly, troubles me quite a bit," Fallon said. "All
across Iowa, family farmers and rural residents are deeply concerned
about the growing power of corporate hog confinement operators. It's
disturbing to see such a large amount of money coming from these groups
to one candidate."
Judge's
2005 campaign contributions included $10,000 from Alina and Peter
DeCoster, another $10,000 from Leah and Sholom Rubashkin of
AgriProcessors, as well as contributions from Syngenta, Monsanto and
Dow Agro Sciences.
"I think
Patty Judge would say these contributions are completely legal, and
they are," Fallon said. "The problem is the rules allow
influence-peddling at a level that most Iowans are only beginning to
become aware of. It's perfectly legal, but is it ethical? I
think not."
Fallon said he will continue to alert the media to his findings in the reports of other candidates in the coming weeks.
"I would
ask the public to be very vigilant about this, and to learn who is
donating to the other candidates," Fallon said. "The influence of big
money in politics affects every other issue, and is really the critical
issue in this campaign."

Where Iowa Gubernatorial and Congressional Candidates Stand on Choice

Where Iowa Gubernatorial and Congressional Candidates Stand on Choice
by Linda Thieman
Today,
Blog for Iowa is joining over 200 other progressive blogs across the nation for
Blog for Choice day - the 33rd anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Our posts today will examine the state of
abortion laws in Iowa and where the candidates stand on the issue of
choice.
First
out of the gate, since this is an election year, I thought I’d take a
look at which gubernatorial and congressional candidates are
pro-choice, who amongst them thinks he has the right to control MY
body, and who is too timid to commit to this politically-charged and
yet most fundamental of all issues.
Iowa’s Democratic Gubernatorial Candidates
• Rep. Ed Fallon (D) – Pro-choice
• Sal Mohamed (D) – Pro-choice
• Vernon Weems (D) – Pro-choice
• Chet Culver (D) – Pro-choice
•
Patty Judge (D) – unclear; says she is pro-choice in the Planned
Parenthood poll, but in 1998, as a member of the Iowa Senate, she voted
for a bill banning certain vaguely defined abortion procedures with no
exception for the woman’s health.
•
Mike Blouin (D) – anti-choice; would not commit to an answer
on the PP poll; however, Blouin, as a member of Congress in 1975 and 1977,
proposed amendments to the U.S. Constitution outlawing abortion. Got to hand it to him, though, for actually addressing the issue on his campaign website - sort of.
All of
the Democratic gubernatorial candidates (except Yackle, who did not
respond) support: 1) public funding to Planned Parenthood for
family planning services and 2) teaching responsible, comprehensive,
medically accurate sex education in public schools.
Iowa’s 1st Congressional District
[Rep. Nussle (R) is vacating, leaving this seat open.]
• Bruce Braley (D) – Pro-choice; a solid progressive.
• Bill Gluba (D) – Anti-choice; too bad, an otherwise solid, progressive anti-war candidate.
•
Rick Dickinson (D) – This guy is so slippery on the issue of
choice, it’s like sleeping on satin sheets. Can’t get any
traction.
Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District
•
David Loebsack (D) – Pro-choice; one of our own, whom, when I
asked if he were pro-choice, responded, “Of COURSE I’m
pro-choice!” Gotta love that guy!
Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District
•
Rep. Leonard Boswell (D) – Mixed bag. From 1999 through 2005,
Boswell voted 8 times on the pro-choice side of bills and amendments,
according to VoteSmart.org,
and 5 times on the anti-choice side. Not a progressive by any
stretch of the imagination, yet not quite a Republican. Has the
slight advantage of being the (Democratic) incumbent in what is often a
close race.
Iowa’s 5th Congressional District
•
Joyce Schulte (D) – Pro-choice. Come on! Let’s elect
THIS woman to Congress! She's a billion times more qualified to
serve the 5th district than our current "representative," whom, from here on in, will be referred to as Big Brother's little buddy.
• Bob Chambers (D) – (no response yet); long-time Democratic activist.
Next up on the docket: Iowa v. Pro-choice Laws – NARAL Pro-choice America gives Iowa a “C.” Arrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhhh!

Iowa Caucus Results Look Good for Fallon

Iowa Caucus Results Look Good for Fallon
State Representative and gubernatorial candidate Ed Fallon
(D-Des Moines) announced during a Wednesday afternoon press conference
that he expects to send over 1,300 delegates to county party
conventions on March 4 and 11.
"These
results are very encouraging," Fallon said. "For caucuses, we were able
to have an organizational presence in over 500 precincts, and 408
Iowans came forward to be precinct captains. Rank and file Iowans are
going to be the key to my grassroots campaign, and their passion for
the bread and butter issues like clean elections, fully funded
education, universal health care, and better environmental protection
are what will take this campaign to the next level."
Fallon's
organization covered over 75% of Polk county precincts, but also had a
presence in 68 counties. Over 150 Fallon supporters had contacted the
campaign as of 11:30 Wednesday morning to report their results.
Seventeen of those caucuses reported Fallon had swept their delegates.
"We're
in a really good position to do well at county conventions, if it comes
to that," Fallon said. "I'm also really excited about our new
volunteers. Seventy-one of my precinct captains were former Republicans
and Independents and registered as Democrats for the first time last
night so they could support me at their caucuses. I'm finding more and
more that Iowans from all political ideologies share a lot of passion
and believe in my core message. They're not as interested in partisan
politics as they are in candidates that present a common-sense message.
I would challenge any other candidate to find that level of Republican
and Independent support."
With
campaign disclosure reports due tomorrow, Fallon took the opportunity
to showcase the strengths he says will limit his need for money.
"Other
candidates will certainly raise more money than I have, but none of
them can claim the grassroots structure that I'm building," Fallon
said. "Iowans are not sheep. Rank and file Iowans will follow the
candidate that is the strongest on the issues they care about, not the
candidate with the most money or the biggest endorsements."

Joyce Schulte to Announce for Congress, 5th District, on January 14

Joyce Schulte to Announce for Congress, 5th District, on January 14
Blog for Iowa Proudly Adds the Indomitable Joyce Schulte to our Candidate Watch List.
Creston, IA – Joyce Schulte
will announce her candidacy to be Iowa’s next Congressperson from
Iowa’s 5th Congressional District, Saturday, January 14, in a six-stop
tour of the district. Schulte will address a different issue of concern
to Iowans and the American people at each stop.
Schulte talks about why she is running. "The people of western
Iowa work hard and contribute strongly to their communities, state and
nation. They want and deserve to be represented by the highest possible
level of integrity, compassion and knowledge in Congress. There is a
vacuum of leadership that leaves Congress to do and say things that are
not Iowa quality. Iowa quality, when implemented on all levels, would
not allow the FEMA disaster that happened after hurricane Katrina;
would challenge every policy of the presidential administration to be
honorable; and would not misrepresent history by hailing heroes where
there are none and deriding the every day hero."
As Schulte told Blog for Iowa in September, "These are only a few of the reasons I'm running for Congress. Very
simply, the issues and concerns of the regular Iowan have been
forgotten, left behind and thrown overboard by my opponent and his band
in Congress.
I'm ready to work for regular people, our students, our families
and our family farmers. I'm ready to lift western Iowa up so our
strengths are seen. We have serious work to do.
We're into the 21st century, so we don't need people in Congress putting us down, or wanting to fence us in.
As a
very young widow in 1973 with 2 young boys to raise, I knew
what work was involved. I did not run away from it. I used all the
skills and talents I learned on the farm. Define the work. Do the work,
rest a bit between the work, and get ready to do it all over again.
Those two young boys are now men, married and one has a young daughter.
So the future is here and it requires the best we can give it.
I'm ready to see American Pride come alive."
Get out there and show your support on January 14 for Joyce Schulte!

Attend Your Iowa Caucus on Monday, January 16 by 6:30pm!

Attend Your Iowa Caucus on Monday, January 16 by 6:30pm!
In addition to the media-related information pertaining to the Iowa
Caucus that Arron posted yesterday, we have this just in from the Ed
Fallon campaign for Iowa Governor about how the caucus may influence
who is the Democratic nominee for governor.
IT'S CAUCUS TIME!
From Rep. Ed Fallon:
Precinct caucuses are less than a week away, and I'd like to
take this chance to encourage you to attend and participate. These
caucuses are particularly significant because the delegates elected
there and at the county conventions will determine the Democratic
nominee for governor if no candidate receives 35% of the vote in the
primary election on June 6th. If you'd like to help Fallon for Governor
organize your precinct, send an e-mail to FFGAdam@gmail.com and we'll get you started.
Also, if you're planning on attending your caucus, I would like to
encourage you to offer this resolution for the party platform:
Whereas campaigns at all levels have become more expensive and more
negative; and whereas large donors and wealthy special interest groups
exert far too much control over policies that affect all Iowans; and
whereas Arizona, Connecticut and Maine have enacted successful clean
election laws which provide for public financing of campaigns for local
and state offices; therefore, be it resolved that the Iowa Democratic
Party supports a clean elections law for Iowa.
Your local precinct caucus will be held on Monday, January 16 at 6:30
pm. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO ARRIVE BY 6:30 IN ORDER TO BE COUNTED AS AN
OFFICIAL ATTENDEE. To find out where your caucus will be held, click
here.
And from the Iowa Democratic Party:
The 2006 Precinct Caucuses are an exciting opportunity for [progressive] Iowa
Democrats to help organize their local parties. There are over 1800
caucus locations in all of Iowa's 99 counties, so that every registered
Democrat can get involved. All precincts start at 6:30 P.M. [If you are late, you will not be admitted.] To find the
location where your precinct meets CLICK HERE.
The purpose of a non-presidential year caucus is to:
1) Discuss and adopt proposed resolutions to be added to the county platform.
2) Elect Delegates and Alternates to County Convention
3) Elect Precinct Committee Persons to the County Central Committee
The precinct caucuses are a great way to promote progressive grassroots activities within the Iowa Democratic Party.
