View Article  Spencer Not to Run Against Latham
Spencer Not to Run Against Latham

By Noneed4thneed

This went out on the DFIA listserv from Des Moines.

I recieved a letter from the Selden Spencer campaign saying that Dr. Spencer will not be running for Congress in Iowa's 4th District. Spencer cited personal and professional reasons for his decision.
Dr. Spencer had this to say in the letter...

"This remains a crucial time in our history, a time in which we struggle to regain the soul of our nation - an American spirit that respects all, works for the common good, and speaks truth and honesty to the multiple grave challenges that we face. Each of us has a role to play in this struggle. I urge you to continue to use your time, treasure, and energy to help achieve this goal for the sake of our children and the future of this great country we all love.

In 2006, the deck was stacked against Dr. Spencer's attempt to defeat Rep. Latham. Spencer entered the race late, he didn't get much support from the state party (because they were already investing in the 1st and 2nd districts and protecting Boswell's seat in the 3rd district), and he didn't have any name recognition at all. When put together, Spencer had a hard raising the money needed and a hard time getting his name out there to voters.

Spencer was also a first time candidate that was new to the campaign trial. However, Dr. Spencer passion and knowledge always was visable and as the campaign went along, he got more and more comfortable and became a more compelling speaker on the campaign trail.

With the experience he gained in 2006, Tom Latham's continued support for Bush's war in Iraq, and the fact Spencer was looking to get into the race earlier, I thought Spencer really had a shot of defeating Tom Latham in 2008.

Hopefully, Democrats in Iowa's 4th district will be able to find a candidate by the end of the year and build on the momentum that Dr. Spencer created to defeat Tom Latham.

Thank you, Dr. Spencer, for all the hard work and passion you poured into the making this country a better place.

Selden Spencer Launches New Site

I copied this post from the Iowa Independent and Essential Estrogen...

Neurologist Selden Spencer is continuing his quest to represent Iowa in the United States House of Representatives by launching a new interactive web site.

"A large part of any campaign these days is internet presence," Spencer said in a letter to supporters. "Our new site is fun and vibrant, with tools for you to use in helping us to send a new voice to Washington to represent Iowa's fourth district."

The site, which was previously limited to primarily blog postings, now has a calendar of events, a photo gallery, Spencer's public appearance schedule, a volunteer form and accepts online contributions. Those interested in certain policy issues are now able to contact the candidate directly via the site.

Spencer lives in Huxley while practicing medicine in Ames. He launched an unsuccessful bid against Republican Tom Latham in 2006, garnering 43 percent of the vote.

Breakfast with Selden Spencer

By The DFIA Training Academy Organizers

Tom Latham wants you to pay thousands to have breakfast with him. Selden Spencer only wants your time.

Our DFA training academy starts at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 24th.  There, you'll learn a lot about how to run a political campaign, how to organize a fund raiser, how to craft an effective media strategy and how to target potential voters.

But what you won't get is breakfast with Dr. Spencer. For that, you'll have to show up on Saturday at 8:30 a.m.--that's where the fund raiser comes in. We're having a bake-sale for Dr. Spencer who needs all the help and he can find in Eastern Iowa.

Dr. Spencer will tell you all about his 2004 race against Latham, his visit to Afghanistan as a volunteer doctor in 2006, and how he ran a very competitive race against a long-time GOP incumbent in only 6 months time. Let's finish the job-- elect Dr. Spencer to Congress in 2008.

We hope to see all of you there...8:30 am on Saturday, March 24th.

IPP Report on Fixing Healthcare in Iowa

Iowa Policy Project senior research consultant Colin Gordon has issued a  new report for the IPP,
“Prescriptions and Placebos: Fixing Health Care in Iowa.”

Below are links to a couple of the many media reports published or aired about Colin’s report:
WHO Radio: Health Care Rx <http://www.whoradio.com/pages/news/local/index.html?feed=121648&article=1533529>
Quad-City Times: Expanded access to health care urged <http://www.qctimes.net/articles/2006/11/28/news/state/doc456bc72f883e8374742544.txt>

In the Cedar Rapids Gazette, James Lynch reported that Gordon “recommended ... that Iowa lawmakers scrap the ‘piecemeal’ approach they’ve used in recent years if their goal is health care coverage that is affordable, accessible and maintains a high level of quality.” From his story:

‘‘Our health care financing system does not work, and it’s understandable that state legislators see a need to step in,’’ said Gordon, a senior research consultant for the Iowa Policy Project and co-author of the report — Prescriptions and Placebos: Fixing Health Care in Iowa — for the non-partisan Iowa Fiscal Partnership. ‘‘They must be careful, however, to take a long-term view and not miss the underlying problem of spiraling health care costs.’’

Previous efforts have encouraged employer-based coverage through tax credits, small-employer purchasing pools, mandates for large employers and other ideas, said Gordon, a historian who wrote ‘‘Dead on Arrival: The Politics of Health Care in Twentieth-Century America.’’

On their own, these proposals represent a fragmented approach to the problem that would do little to expand coverage or increase affordability, and could actually make things worse, he said.

‘‘I really think that trying to patch up employer-based insurance is like moving furniture into a burning house. It guarantees double-digit inflation and rising uninsurance into the future,’’ Gordon said.

We encourage your review of this new report as the Iowa General Assembly prepares to return to the Statehouse in January.

Loebsack's Going to DC
(and other dem victories)

By Sam Garchik

Dave Loebsack ran a great, dignified campaign against a tough opponent, and did what no other challenger could do in 30 years. He beat Jim Leach. Way to go Dave. Enjoy DC.

Bruce Braley beat a tough opponent also, as did Leonard Boswell. Iowa now has three Democratic Congressmen. Times are good. Thanks also to Selden Spencer and Joyce Schulte, who ran good campaigns in tough areas.

We also have a new Democratic governor, a new Democratic Secretary of State, and a good candidate for Iowa Secretary of Agriculture in 4 years. O'Brien ran a good campaign about important issues, and should continue to work for the people in the state of Iowa. We need her.

On to the Iowa House. Andrew Wenthe, McKinley Bailey, and Eric Palmer beat two tough  GOP incumbents. As did Elesha Gayman, who, at 28, is, I think, Iowa's youngest ever female elected to the State House. She will work there with Tyler Olson, who graduated high school in 1994. The future of our party is in good hands. Meanwhile, Social Studies Teacher Art Staed takes over a former GOP seat, as did Doris Kelley. Mark Nolte and Sally Vitamvas both ran good campaigns, but came up short.

The State Senate also went well for Democrats. Rob Hogg, Bill Heckroth, and Stacci Appel all won seats previously held by Republicans, Becky Schmitz beat an incumbent in Southern Iowa.

More results are here, and more commentary will be forthcoming.

A Reminder That The GOP is Alll About Shrub

By Sam Garchik

This picture is on the front page of the Voter Vault, the GOPs version of the Van. I wonder if all of the Republicans know that the GOP heads are only in it for the Shrub.

I'd love to see what the Voter Vault has, by the way, so if any of you have any logins, please let me know. Unlike the VAN, it's national, which means that state Republicans in Iowa use it. And by the way, it was made overseas. Gosh, they really love America.

That brings me to my next point.

Iowa Progress broke this story about Eric Palmer's opponent, Danny Carrol, who scams old ladies out of their money. This must be what Republicans mean when they talk about helping "President Bush's Agenda for America."

Tom Latham, doing his aprt to help the "Agenda for America," has gone negative on Spencer, probabaly because Spencer received three major endorsements (Mason City Globe-Gazette, Des Moines Register, and Ames Tribune). Meanwhile, Spencer has a good ad running, which can be seen right here.
