Looking for Feingold Stance on Recent Legislation?
By Sam Garchik I got this link from Sean Flaherty through the JC Dems discussion group on Yahoo. Check out what Russ has to say about the FISA vote. http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/2008/06/five_important/ Sunday, November 12

Russ Ends 08 Run; Who Will Carry the Progressive Banner?
By Russ Feingold Well. With Feingold out, we have Villsack and TBD. Who will carry the progressive banner? By the way, check out this from KK on the GOP in Iowa having a hard time getting leadership squared away. Apparently, they can't figure out who is supposed to vote for minority leader in Des Moines. Dear Friends and Supporters, I hope all of you know how much I have appreciated the incredible response you have given me and the efforts of our Progressive Patriots Fund since January, 2005. In addition to all of our work in Wisconsin and D.C., I have traveled to seventeen states trying to promote the election of progressive Democrats in all states. At every stop from Birmingham, Alabama to Burlington, Vermont, to Ft. Dodge, Iowa, to Las Vegas, Nevada, people have agreed with my view that we need to stand up for a strong, principled Democratic party that is willing to replace timidity with taking the risks of promoting a platform of bold solutions to our nation's problems. Unfailingly, people responded well to my positions: opposition to the Iraq war; calling for a timeline to redeploy our troops from Iraq so we can focus on those who attacked us on September 11th, 2001; my opposition to the flawed provisions of the USA Patriot Act that threaten the freedoms of law-abiding Americans; my call for accountability for the Administration's arrogant disregard for the law especially with regard to illegal wiretapping; fighting for fiscal responsibility including tough common sense budget rules that will help end the reckless policies that have heaped a mountain of debt on our children and grandchildren; as well as my strong belief in guaranteed healthcare for all Americans and substantial investment in alternative energy sources and technologies. Yet, while I've certainly enjoyed the repeated comments or buttons saying, "Run Russ Run", or "Russ in '08", I often felt that if a piece of Wisconsin swiss cheese had taken the same positions I've taken, it would have elicited the same standing ovations. This is because the hunger for progressive change we feel is obviously not about me but about the desire for a genuinely different Democratic Party that is ready to begin to reverse the 25 years of growing extremism we have endured. I'm sure a campaign for President would have been a great adventure and helpful in advancing a progressive agenda. At this time, however, I believe I can best advance that progressive agenda as a Senator with significant seniority in the new Senate serving on the Foreign Relations, Intelligence, Judiciary and Budget Committees. Although I have given it a lot of thought, I cannot muster the same enthusiasm for a race for President while I am trying simultaneously to advance our agenda in the Senate. In other words, if I really wanted to run for President, regardless of the odds or other possible candidates, I would do so. However, to put my family and all of my friends and supporters through such a process without having a very strong desire to run, seems inappropriate to me. And, yes, while I would strongly prefer that our nominee in 2008 be someone who had the judgment to oppose the Iraq war from the beginning, I am prepared to work as hard as I can through the Progressive Patriots Fund, and consistent with my duties in the Senate, to maintain or increase our gains from November 7 in the Congress and, of course, to elect a Democrat as President in 2008. Most important, I want to continue my work as a Senator from this wonderful State of Wisconsin. Our fourteen year ongoing conversation that has taken place in hundreds of communities in Wisconsin in the form of open Listening Sessions is the principal reason I have been perceived as "ahead of the curve" on many key issues. Simply listening to the reasoning and passions of Wisconsinites remains the best source of good ideas and common sense I've ever encountered. Sincerely, Russ Feingold Wednesday, October 11

Pick Iowa in the PPF Challenge
By The Progressive Patriot's Fund Greetings, I'm proud to announce that because of your financial support earlier this month, today is the beginning of our new "Pick a Progressive Party" event. Instead of featuring candidates like we usually do, we want you to help us choose which state parties we should target for critical efforts to get out the vote. You can vote for as many states as you want, and the five states that receive the most votes will each receive a $3,000 contribution to help fund their efforts to get voters to the polls. Over the past year, we've been able to support many progressive candidates in tight races across the country. You've been a tremendous help not only in picking these exciting candidates, but in joining us to support them financially as well. Now that we're closing in on the election, we wanted to focus on the state parties. State parties are responsible for the voter and volunteer motivation necessary to make a strong final showing in the last days of the campaign, and we want to make sure that they have the resources to deliver the votes our candidates need. In less than a month, the crucial midterm elections could create Democratic majorities in the House and Senate, and these state parties will play an integral role in deciding which way the scales tip. Please cast your vote today. Sincerely, Russ Feingold p.s. Make sure you vote today – voting closes at midnight on October 16!-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thursday, June 22

By Sam Garchik It's been a very hectic week with the convention and all, but I wanted to bring you up to speed on a bunch of different issues and happenings. Courtesy of The Left Coast of Iowa Blog, I posted Joyce Schulte's response to King's comments on Thomas. I encourage you all to read what she said, as she speaks for all of us. Also, Chris at Political Forecast is doing a great job of keeping tabs on what's going on in this state. He pointed two things out to me that I want to pass on to you. The Eminem Domain issue keeps popping up, and it has the gov in a bind. Wait, sorry. That's State 29. Seriously, Chris linked to this article in City Pages which tries to sum up all the arguments made by which rich and famous Iowans about eminent domain. I still can't figure out why the Johnson County state reps voted against the bill, which isn't to say I am accusing them of something. It's just to say I'm looking to find out why. Chris also covered the Iowans for Sensible Priorities bloggers press conference. They had a good showing at the state convention as well, so look for them to get more traction in Iowa. On the Trail of the Contender Villsack was written up in the American Prospect, who teases the interview here. I got to hear the old guv talk 3 times in one day at the convention. I don't want to comment any further, and I still don't know if I am going to caucus for him, but $600,000 for Culver buys him some good will in this state. We are starting to get a lot of event notices. It's hard to keep them all straight, and this is a statewide blog, so I'll mention these, and then encourage you all to check out our calendar: District 1 Bill Gluba endorsed Braley, saying, "the fundamental principles and positions we share are more numerous than the few issues on which we disagree." Also, DFQC is planning an Iraq War Forum on Tuesday, June 27. You can join the group and RSVP at DFA-Link.
District 2 The Johnson County Democrats will have their grand opening this Saturday in Iowa City. Ag. Secretary Judge will be there representing the Culver-Judge ticket. That's at 535 E. College, June 24, from 1 - 3 PM. Sunday, June 25th, from 1 - 3 PM, Dave Loebsack is having a yard sign party across the district. They are serving food, and you can find one near you: Iowa City - City Park Dave Bradley got us Air America, and I'm loving every second of it. Dave reminds us that we should "follow up with KXIC and ClearChannel with positive notes on the addition of AirAmerica programming. And remember since this is a business decision for ClearChannel, they need to know that we will support advertisers of Air America programming. We will get a list of advertisers out after a couple of weeks. And it would really help to stop by the business and say "Thanks" directly to them. I am sure that Right Wingers will be vocal in their opposition. Don't let them intimidate advertisers." You can email the folks at KXIC (I used to work there, in the interest of full disclosure, but didn't know any of these folks): District 3 Time to get your walking shoes on. It's Polk County Fourth of July parade time! Call Tamyra at 515-285-1800 to join a parade and get details* District 4 Thanks to Christina of the Yahoo Group Democracy for Iowa, we now know of a big human rights showdown in Fort Dodge. If you live in Fort Dodge, make sure you let the council know that it should stand up to the right wing. District 5 In-State, Out of State, and Out of Sight! Did you wish you could go to Florida and recount hanging chads? Black Box Voting is giving you the chance to register for the National Hand County Registry. Have good eyes, will travel! Or not, as hand counts may come to an election near you. Selden Spencer is in the running as a Map Changer on Warner's PAC, and Culver is up for some help from Feingold's PPF. Thursday, June 15

By Sam Garchik I'm headed to the state convention on Saturday, so here's an early taste of what's going on this week: Firs off: The Iraq War Issue is Being Debated Today! You can send a letter to your Congressman through True Majority. This week, Iowans for Sensible Priorities will be holding a bloggers press conference in Des Moines. It is on Wednesday, June 21st, from 8 - 9:30 AM, at the Mars Cafe on University. Warren Langley, former CEO of the Pacific Stock Exchange will be in attendance. And ISP will be buying snacks and coffee. Contact Dave Stone at (515) 244-5656 for more info. By the way, check out the ISP pigmobile. It's even got a new blog. In other news, Mathemagician King is at it again. This time, he says it's safer in Iraq than in DC. This site even has video. Thanks to Ellen Ballas for pointing us this way. And for those of you in the dark, John Edwards came to Iowa last week. His blog covered his visit here and here. Finally, Russ Feingold announced that Rich Olive was the winner of his "Pick a Progressive Patriot" contest. Olive, an Iowa State Senate candidate, is running against Stewart Iverson in the 5th Senate District. The PPF will give Olive $5,000, in addition to giving smaller amounts to each of the other five candidates:

by Sam Garchik I found out about this from a Leonard Boswell email, strangely enough. I guess he is working with Feingold on this one, and any of these candidates would do well to receive your money and vote. As you all know, the Iowa Senate is tied right now, and any gain would give us the majority. Depending on how the governor's race turns out, the Senate may wind up being crucial to progressives, particularly in the areas of choice and the death penalty. Boswell Bulletin
I had the opportunity to meet with Senator Feingold recently while he was here in Iowa listening to Democrats and helping congressional candidates across the state. Russ has been very supportive of my re-election campaign and I'm proud that he was a special guest at the pancake breakfast I held in Johnston last month. Since Russ formed the Progressive Patriots Fund, he has been supporting outstanding Democratic candidates across the country. Russ now brings his help directly to Iowa with his first ever "Pick a Progressive Patriot - Iowa" event. Russ is dedicated to helping elect more Democrats nationwide and I am pleased to have the opportunity to announce the latest part of his effort. Senator Feingold's Progressive Patriots Fund will give $5,000 to the Iowa State Senate candidate with the most votes on his website by midnight on May 31, 2006. The "Pick a Progressive Patriot – Iowa" event is part of Senator Feingold's 50-state effort to help elect more Democrats. As you know, the Iowa State Senate is evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. The election in November is critical to our goal of returning control to our Democratic leaders. We have six great state senate Democratic challengers and I want you to join Senator Feingold and me as we work together to make sure these candidates have the support and resources they need to be successful in November. Senator Feingold has spent his career standing up for what he believes and listening to people in Wisconsin and across the country. This is your chance to stand up and let your voices be heard and help a deserving Iowan receive a $5,000 contribution. Please log on to Senator Feingold's website, www.progressivepatriotsfund.com/vote and vote in Pick a Progressive Patriot - Iowa. Sincerely,
Leonard Saturday, April 29

Feingold's Visit to Iowa City
By Sam Garchik Wisconsin Senator Russ Feingold came to Iowa City yesterday to remind us that we need to do everything we can to elect Dave Loebsack. "There are critical moments when we are deciding the well being of the American People. This is the time to break one party rule." Feingold moved on to Cedar Rapids for a fundraiser for Dave. Before he could go, Dennis and Robin Roseman stopped to ask about an FAA contract dispute.
Did anyone else get a chance to talk to, or see Feingold? What were your impressions? |
