  Loebsack Responds to Budget Vote

By Sam Garchik

Ellen Ballas sent this on to me from the Loebsack campaign:

Loebsack Responds to Leach's Vote on Budget Resolution

Dave Loebsack issued a statement Thursday responding to Iowa Congressman Jim Leach's recent vote in favor of the Republican sponsored 2007 budget resolution.

"Leach has proved he is now a champion of big deficits, big debts, and a great tax burden on our children and the future of America. Not only has Leach shown his disregard for responsible budgets and spending, but has also succumbed to bully pulpit pressure from the Republican Party," Loebsack said.

In a recent news story published in The Hill, Alexander Bolton reported House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) made a thinly concealed threat to GOP incumbents warning of possibly losing choice committee appointments if they failed to vote for the resolution. Leach was included on a list of Boehner's GOP members who could hinder the Republican leadership's goals, however, in the end Leach fell in line with the House Republican majority.

"The vote for the budget resolution, and a clear lack of leadership in failing to stand up to the Majority leader, reaffirm it is time for a change in Iowa's second district," Loebsack continued.

  No Longer Under the Radar

By Mark Nolte

It was one year ago that a political science professor at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa decided it was time. Having spent the better part of the last twenty years working behind the scenes on democratic campaigns it was his turn to be the candidate.  So, from his kitchen table, Dave Loebsack began calling family, friends and influential democrats across the state whom he had gotten to know from his years working in the trenches.  When he posed the question of whether or not they felt he should be the democrat that finally unseats Rep Jim Leach after 30 years of wavering on the issues, their response was clear: they sent checks.

This process continued through the summer, a one man campaign that started to snowball.  Soon he had filed his paperwork and there was a treasurer taking the checks, enamored students began taking shifts at his kitchen table helping with research and various duties of a fledgling campaign.  By November of 2005 word was starting to spread, Dave had raised an impressive amount of money for a first time candidate still a year out from the election.

His constant message of leadership and change coupled with his depth of knowledge on the issues that matter most to Iowa voters was resonating where ever he spoke.  Before the end of 2005 Dave realized that it was time to get organized.  He brought on Friedman and Associates to manage the campaign and in January the effort moved from the kitchen table to its headquarters in Iowa City.

It was clear at last Saturday’s 2nd District Convention that the campaign has hit its stride.  Staff, Interns and Volunteers bedecked in royal blue t-shirts emblazoned with “DAVE” were everywhere.  As the crowd of over 400 rose to its feet, sporting lapel stickers and waving placards to cheer on the humble educator and tireless campaigner, he stopped just for a second to take it all in.  Then it was back to work.

Loebsack Nominated by the 2nd District

By Ellen Ballas

Dave Loebsack, Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress, was nominated at the 2nd District Convention in Mt. Pleasant on April 29th

Last week's second district convention in Mt. Pleasant was more than a great example of democracy in action; it stood out as a shining beacon of progressive hope. Besides nailing down the platform and other important business, the convention this year had a special purpose – to elect Dave Loebsack as the Democratic candidate for Congress. It was truly a remarkable event, but not because there was any doubt that Dave would be unanimously endorsed. It was remarkable because of the energy and excitement in the room about the campaign and the gut feeling that this time we will vote Jim Leach out of office.

Bill Olmsted gave Dave a great introduction. He hit the nail on the head as he spoke to the frustration we all feel toward the ineffectual meandering representation of Jim Leach. The Republican House leadership knows that when every last vote matters Leach will be there for them with his Republican vote. The rest of the time they cut him loose to flounder unproductively as a moderate Republican who ultimately tries to mask himself as a Democrat in order to appease 2nd district voters. To be clear, Dave Loebsack is the Democrat and he will not be beholden to anyone but the people of the second district. As our "Voice for Change" Dave will "lead when it matters, not when it's safe. He will do what's right, not what is easy."

A spontaneous demonstration occurred as Dave took the stage, with people holding signs and chants of "Dave, Dave, Dave." It was an overwhelming expression of support and confidence in Dave.

The event must have been a great introduction to the Loebsack campaign for the new Field Director, Jennifer Tuttle. Jennifer comes from Rhode Island where she was the Program Coordinator for the Rhode Island Sierra Club. Before that, she worked in Colorado as the Field Director for Democrat, Jay Fetcher. Jennifer jumped right in and did a great job at the district convention organizing and revving up the crowd. When you see her knocking on doors in the 2nd district, please make sure to give Jennifer a big Iowa welcome.

Get involved in the Loebsack campaign - we have a real opportunity to take back the second district and bring real leadership to Congress. Please visit the website at www.loebsackforcongress.org or call the campaign at 319-351-DAVE.
